Capcom And Namco Team Up For Crossover Fighting Games

Street Fighter X Tekken announced at Capcom Comic-Con Panel.

Weird, right?
Weird, right?
Rumors first started cropping up back at EVO a couple of weeks ago, and now Capcom and Bandai Namco have made it official: the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises will collide next year via a pair of upcoming fighting games.

Capcom mainly discussed its side of the conflict, which will be called Street Fighter X Tekken. That's "Street Fighter Cross Tekken" if you're saying it out loud, sort of like Namco X Capcom, the crossover RPG that Namco released on the PS2. The upcoming fighter will be a two-on-two tag battle game, and so far Ryu and Chun-Li are confirmed for the SF side while Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams are set on the Tekken side. Dan also makes an appearance in the trailer, but that's not exactly confirmation that he'll appear in playable form. Capcom's game will run on the same engine technology that powered Super Street Fighter IV.

Namco will also develop and release a crossover fighter. If naming conventions hold, this game will probably end up going by Tekken X Street Fighter. That's how Capcom and SNK handled it when they did a similar character swap for Capcom vs. SNK and SNK vs. Capcom. But all of that is unconfirmed at the moment and no actual details on this game are available.

I was a serious Tekken fan early on, but once Tekken 4 hit, that and the subsequent sequels felt like they were quickly losing their way. But the characters themselves are solid, so I'm at least interested to see what Capcom does with them. I'm... a bit less interested in seeing what Namco's developers do with the Capcom characters.

Street Fighter X Tekken is in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but no release date has been given at this time. Here's the game's first trailer.

I'm interested how this will turn out. A little bummed about 2v2 though, I would've prefered 1v1. I've always been horrible at fighting games that were anything but 1v1.

I'm way more excited for Namco's version to be honest.

Like I said in the other thread, E. Honda better be in the Capcom game or I'm going to be pissed.

Goddamnit I have to buy a console now.

Tekken's characters absolutely cream over the SF cast in terms of memorability so this is one crossover I'm exceptionally looking forward to! Namco version of course. I've always preferred my Tekken fighting style to SF's 2D plain.

YOU TALKING SMACK ABOUT MY STREET FIGHTER CHARACTERS YO?

Maybe this speaks for how devalued Tekken has become over the years, but this feels like a step down for Capcom after Street Fighter 4.

What the fuck? That's nuts.

But I'm not really understanding what the difference is between "Tekken X Street Fighter" and "Street Fighter X Tekken". Is there going to be Capcom-developed version of the game and a Namco-developed version of the game alongside each other?

EDIT: Nevermind, like Capcom vs. SNK and SNK vs. Capcom. I need to learn to read better.

Apparently you can only tag during Ultras.

Jeff is in the correct state of mind. I like how he threw "a bit" in there to keep people from raging too much. Ryu hamfistedly juggling Blanka while wearing stupid ass accessories, yeah I'll pass on that one. The other one will be good. Capcom have done more with less.

I def. feel Namco has way more to gain by this than Capcom, but hey, I'm intrigued.  Still would have rather this had been Darkstalkers, though.

ALL RIGHT YO!

Speaking of the Namco version, I want to see how Zangief is going to play.  Will his SPDs work?  It's kinda funny that I'm a little more interested in the Namco game because I want to see the Street Fighter characters in a 3D playing field.

Yeah, that's what it sounded like to me.

I also agree with the Tekken franchise sucking since Tekken 3.

Tekken was an arcade perfect port and one of the defnitive reasons on why I pre-ordered a Playstation back in the mid-ninties.

Big fan of SF. Big fan of Tekken. They are my top 2 fighting franchises of all time. THIS IS GONNA BE FRIKKIN' AWESOME!!!!
Emilioon July 24, 2010 at 2:06 p.m.
Yawn... wake me up when Capcom decides to work on a new idea...

Actually, that Pac-Man x Megaman looks far more interesting.
ryanwhoon July 24, 2010 at 2:07 p.m.
Tekken's high point and SF's low point coincided around the same time, and that is the only time they've ever been anything resembling equals.
wordsgohereon July 24, 2010 at 2:08 p.m.
I will play both of these.
