OK, last time I checked, Sheng Long and Gouken aren't the same thing. But that isn't stopping a round of reports shouting "OH MAN SHENG LONG IS A CHARACTER IN STREET FIGHTER IV" from spreading like wildfire today. I finally got some time to read these stories and see what the heck was going on, and it sounds like Sheng Long is still a move, not a person.

A Gouken figure released at ComicCon in 2006.
I'll back up a bit. You know how Ryu says "you must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance" as his post-fight quote in Street Fighter II? Well, that actually refers to his dragon punch. But EGM ran with it as an April Fool's joke ages ago and claimed that Sheng Long was a mystical hidden character in the game and detailed an outlandish method to see him. It was pretty funny.

This happened back when the Street Fighter storyline hadn't been fleshed out that much, so the jump from there to claiming that Sheng Long was the master of Ryu and Ken wasn't a huge leap. Capcom would later fill in a lot of the blanks in the series and add a bunch of extra characters and figures that would appear in anime, manga, game endings, and so on. Gouken was eventually created and inserted into the story in Street Fighter Alpha as the guy who trained Ryu and Ken. He's also Akuma's brother and serves as the good yin to Akuma's mad evil yang.

So it's Gouken, then, that has appeared in Street Fighter IV arcade machines in Japan, according to a report in Famitsu that 1up picked up. But Gouken doesn't translate to Sheng Long over here. SOTA Toys released a Gouken figure (pictured) in the States back in 2006 and kept his original name.

Oh, but hey, Sheng Long is totally in the game, though. Just select Ryu or Ken and hit F, D, DF plus any punch button to see it.

Gouken should be pretty bad ass, I'm really looking forward to the epic battles between him and Akuma.

He must defeat his dragon punch...? huh?  Why is there a story in a fighter anyway?

Wonder what took so long for this "hidden" to be found

I thought that guy looked exactly like Akuma...

Ripped from wikipedia
"The name Sheng Long comes from a mistranslation of the "shō ryū" ( rising dragon) of Ryu's Shōryūken (昇龍拳) into Chinese pinyin-- "shēng lóng." One of Ryu's win quotes in the English localization of the arcade version of Street Fighter II was "You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance." The original win quote in the Japanese version actually translates to "If you cannot break through the Rising Dragon Punch, you cannot win!" (昇龍拳を破らぬ限り、おまえに勝ち目はない! Shōryūken o yaburanu kagiri, omae ni kachime wa nai!?) However, the English translation gives the impression that Ryu is referring to a person (his supposed master), instead of simply being the name of one of his techniques."

So, Ryu is to Ken as Akuma is to Gouken?

Funny since Ryu favors his fireball over his dragonpunch. Although I know lately ryu has a dragonpunch super.

you defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance

You forgot "must" between you and defeat, Jeff.  ;)

I'd like to take credit for this article, as I typed "SHENG LONG IS IN STREET FIGHTER IV!" in the irc chat, and Jeff made sure to point out my incorrectness.

How the hell do you remember all this stuff Jeff?  I guess that's why you're the game journalist and I am.. well... not.

Yang is good, traditionally, and yin is evil :P

You being post-modern, Jeff? :)

So is Gouken not being given a western name like Gouki = Akuma?

I don't like the idea of the story being re-written, Akuma kills their dad, loses to Gouken but then returns and kills him. How is Gouken's appearence (not to mention Bison's) in this game going to be explained?

to FLStyle: it's storyline in a fighting game. I'm not sure Capcom cares too much about what goes into the story. They allowed Street Fighter: The Movie to be made after all....

I remember that April fools joke... almost as good as the Laura Croft nude one that had me playing for 2 days until it dawned on us (me n Julio) that it was in the April issue..”

Now, just add Gouki & Gouken's teacher Gotetsu and we can finally have the whole set!

Sheng Long is the dragon that lost his balls in Dragonball Z.

The whole Sheng Long thing is olde news to most SF fans.

We all knew Gouken was practically a certainty after Capcom released that anime promo video a couple months back.

EDIT:

Like that dude said. Yin is Dark, Yang is Light. That's why I was always going like "what does Ryan mean that we talked Yang about this thing".
By the way that animated trailer is sweet.

"Mad evil Yang" is now my favorite catch phrase for the rest of the night.
