Red Faction: Armageddon Unleashes On May 31

The next Red Faction gets a date and building foundations are warned in advance.

Red Faction: Armageddon now has a release date. THQ has slotted in the fourth Red Faction for a May 31, 2011 release in the US, confirming that the title will indeed hit before June and before E3 madness gets fully underway. Europeans, however, will have to wait until said month: Armageddon will start appearing on European shelves later on June 3, 2011.

These dates are for the two console versions, as well as the PC version, which I assume will see a release in most digital distribution outlets, including the ever-popular Steam.

Head Under Mars In Red Faction: Armageddon

Not a single tower comes crumbling down in this trailer.

This is the time to share pre-order bonuses with you, but the information on what Volition and THQ will offer those who take the reserve plunge is limited. GameStop, Best Buy, and Amazon currently aren’t offering anything special... but the THQ store is. If you pre-order one of the console versions through the publisher’s own store, you’ll receive a “free glow in the dark t-shirt” alongside your purchase.

Armageddon tells the story of Darius Mason and his fight against a “long-dormant evil” that is unleashed above and below the surface of Mars. Unlike Guerrilla, Armageddon is a linear affair, but the series’ staple destruction mechanics are purportedly still very much a part of the game.

Who's got this one on their radar?

FUCKING STOKED!  Hope StarFoxA and Metroid545 are ready to get on this shit!

I've had this on my radar since I finished guerilla. I figured they'd expand on the tech in another game, and luckily armageddon has has good buzz so far.
ballsnbayonetson Feb. 23, 2011 at 4:47 p.m.
i liked the open world in guerilla alot tho. =(
wreckson Feb. 23, 2011 at 5:07 p.m.
Fuck Yes.
OneKillWonder_on Feb. 23, 2011 at 5:53 p.m.
Can't fucking wait for this. May is going to be a busy and crowded month for games, but I'm definitely picking this up day one.
MistaSparkleon Feb. 23, 2011 at 6:11 p.m.
Yesssssssss!!!! RF anything is always amazing (except for that driving game...)!!!!! I hope they release a demo soon!
CrescentFreshon Feb. 23, 2011 at 8:01 p.m.
Very cool. I hope this plays similar to the first. I loved running around demolishing everything in sight with my sledgehammer!
AncientMechaon Feb. 23, 2011 at 8:19 p.m.
Unless they add the destruction tech of the last one to the enemies of this one, I'll pass. Even if they do have dynamically destructable enemies, I'm not terribly interested.
Animastaon Feb. 23, 2011 at 8:27 p.m.
GLOW IN THE DARK T-SHIRT!?

if it's cool lookin I'd get it, but... It's also good to hear them releasing the PC version day and date. hopefully the PC version won't be that terrible :D
Slaker117on Feb. 23, 2011 at 9:28 p.m.
I wish the destruction tech from the last one was put in a better game. I still had fun with it, but it felt like something that could have been amazing if it wasn't held back by a boring structure and mediocre gunplay.

Can't wait to get my ass to Mars.
PatVBon Feb. 24, 2011 at 12:31 a.m.
Cool! Hopefully they've improved the shooting mechanics since Guerrilla.
vinsanityv22on Feb. 24, 2011 at 4:25 a.m.
The move to a more linear, engaging design should alleviate many of Guerilla's problems. Hopefully, Armageddon won't be as disappointing, aimless, or repetitive as it's predecessor. Volition is a talented team - I wanna get excited for this. I think I'll just wait until THQ starts ramping up preview coverage. One thing's for sure; this is - far and away - Volition's most exciting game since the days of the original Red Faction and Freespace. They've been wasting their time on openworld dogshit for too long now.
Though I definitely WON'T be pre-ordering via THQ's online store. Used that pile to preorder Darksiders. One of the biggest headaches EVER as a gamer was getting my pre-order bonus from them for that game. Namely, Red Faction Guerilla - remember that? That was a sic promotion; pre-order Darksiders, get Red Faction Guerilla FREE? Totally awesome. But THQ's online store is garbage.

This game trailer has too many aliens and not enough building destruction. I would have preferred it if the game had gone way over toward the demolition side of things. Like sneak into a base, strategically place explosives, sneak out, and see how much you can take out in one blast. This was what I always tried to do in the last game, but you couldn't sneak. So it never really worked the way I wanted.

This game seems to be going in the opposite direction toward just fighting aliens. If I want to do that then I'll play Dead Space. This just looks a little flat and generic.
ProfessorEsson Feb. 24, 2011 at 6:48 a.m.
I love open world games and liked Guerrilla so much that I'm having a real hard time accepting all the changes.

I'll try and stay optimistic tho.
Animastaon Feb. 24, 2011 at 7:33 a.m.
@vinsanityv22: Saints Row 2 is amazing, dude, I will not have you dismissing their open world content :P
m0rdr3don Feb. 24, 2011 at 9:16 a.m.

After amazing and fun games like Saints Row 2 and Guerrilla I'm definitely gonna get this. Kind of a little worried that they're not making it open world, but I'll give em the benefit of the doubt.

Alphazeroon Feb. 24, 2011 at 2:58 p.m.
Story wise, meh. Not where I wanted it to go. Gameplay wise, I'm down. I loved the last Red Faction.

Dig Deeper into Red Faction: Armageddon

Get your ass back to Mars in the fourth instalment of the environmental destruction-focused Red Faction series. In Armageddon, players will go back underground for the first time since the original Red Faction. Unfortunately, sub-par gameplay that ignores what worked in the previous title means that Armageddon killed the franchise.

US Release Date: June 7, 2011
