Report Says Mirror's Edge 2 Has Been Canned

But has it really?

EA are big fans of Mirror’s Edge, so it’s always been a question of “when” and not “if” a sequel to the free-running action game would appear. In fact, there’s been what EA VP Patrick Soderlund calls a “small team” working on a demo of the game since, at least, mid-2009. But if a report that hit late last year is true, that team’s demo has been rejected, and thus so has Mirror’s Edge 2.

"EA was shown a prototype, but declined with askance,” says a Press 2 Play TV report, which has been translated by Eurogamer. “The project has been stopped--involved parties at DICE are working on something else now. Patrick himself seems to have Mirror's Edge near his heart, but they are not in the business of charity."

As 1UP notes, that’s a strange reason for a game to get canned at this point. The original Mirror’s Edge flopped back in 2008, which was quite some time ago. Here's how that turned out.

Mirror's Edge Review

Ryan tells you where you should look before you take the leap with Mirror's Edge.

Note that the report states that the Mirror’s Edge 2 team is now working on something else. If the cancellation of Battlefield 1943 and “Onslaught” PC is an indication of how DICE is pulling talent away from other projects, chances are that this team is now crunching on Battlefield 3.

EA gave comment to 1UP without actually denying it or confirming the accuracy of this rumor, but it did mention, “Mirror’s Edge is an important franchise.” Surely, the sequel to the first game in an ‘important franchise’ won’t be tabled for too long, right?

I loved the first one but I admit it did have flaws. I can see why EA wouldn't want a sequel.

I don't know if it's appropriate to say it's been canned. Joystiq's update with this quote from the EA rep says this, making it sound like it's just been tabled for now probably to work on BF3. I can still dream:

[Update 3:05pm:An EA spokesperson got back to us with this: "Mirror's Edge is an important franchise built by the DICE studio in Stockholm. DICE is currently producing Battlefield 3. Nothing further to announce." With just one full title under that name, and the aforementioned mobile game, franchise sounds like an awfully strong word for Mirror's Edge. With that in mind, we'll try to keep our hopes up.]

I just wish they'd made it non-combat. I didn't see why there had to be any fighting/shooting at all. Just make a competition game between parkour artists. Also Faith seemed like kinda of a dull committee made character to me.

mirrors edge is one of the worst games of this generation...
the concept of gameplay was neat, but everything else was just sickeningly bad... they probably made the right choice to reject it after seeing one character open her mouth.

Actually, the game didn't really need a sequel anyway, but it would be nice if they made something else in a similar vein.
Is using the sploiler box really that exciting?

the first one pretty much fell flat on it's face. this does not surprise me.

Didn't that guy just say on Twitter that he hates baseless rumors via out of context quotes?

edit: Of course, it wouldn't be a problem if video game guys didn't play coy all the damn time.  Be like Randy Pitchford: let us know that Borderlands 2 exists.

One of my favorite games this generation. If the sequel gets canned, there will be hell to pay, EA!

... Luckily, thanks to the first game, I have learned how to parkour, and will therefore be able to use my skills to break into the EA offices and steal the prototype.

You make war game, no running, you make now!! Running is no guns, make guns!!! NOW!!!
erics22on Feb. 15, 2011 at 1:15 p.m.
@Chris2KLee: yes, the game had a good idea....but then again they added guns because people like shooting....bad ideas ruin good games.

I played through the entire game going for the achievement that didn't allow you to shoot (or kill?) any of your enemies.  This turned it more into a puzzle game--not unlike Portal--where you had to outsmart your enemies, not outgun them.  I'd love to see another Mirror's Edge game that didn't allow you to use guns at all.  The controls made the impossible (first person platforming) possible.  The art style and music fit together in a very sharp and deeply memorable way.  This is trite, but we've seen far too many greys and browns this generation; it was very nice to have a game that was in vivid bright colors.  If they polished it up a bit--basically do an overhaul on the story and characters, which were easily the least memorable part of the game--I would love to play a Mirror's Edge 2.

I think a sequel would have made this series shine.

Should bring it back and make it like the old SSX games, all about tricks and race time.

I really enjoyed the first. Flawed but very unique. Would of loved to see a follow up to it.
