Wii U Appearing at CES Next Month, But Don’t Expect Much

The company won't have a booth, and the games won't be any different.

If you want to give Wii U a shot before launch, try sneaking into Nintendo's meeting room.

Nintendo hasn’t said much about Wii U since its unveiling at E3 this year, instead promising a completely new unveiling at E3 next year.

CNET reported today that Nintendo would be bringing Wii U to next month’s tech-heavy CES show in Las Vegas, Nevada, but that was supposed to happen last year, too. It just had a meeting room.

Wii U will be coming to CES 2012, but it won’t be making a big splash; the company won’t have a booth. The statement Nintendo released to me today makes it clear we should keep expectations in check.

“Nintendo of America, working with the 2012 International CES management, will offer demos of the upcoming Wii U console to members of the media who did not see the system at the 2011 E3 Expo. However, Nintendo will not have a booth at CES, nor does it plan to include any games, experiences or information beyond what was available at the 2011 E3 Expo. Production and development efforts remain on track for the Wii U launch, which will take place between the start of the 2012 E3 Expo in June, and the end of 2012.”

In other words, anyone who missed Wii U at E3 or didn’t attend the show can check out what those people already played. Nintendo told me the builds would be the same as they were this summer. I wouldn't mind checking out HD Zelda again...

And before you ask: we will not be at CES this year, but Tested will!

I'm waiting to be impressed by something about the Wii U. Bring it. There are hardly any details out there.

AnZ17Non Dec. 19, 2011 at 12:38 p.m.

I will continue on not expecting much.

dvorakon Dec. 19, 2011 at 12:44 p.m.

An announcement about not having an announcement!

White_Silhouetteon Dec. 19, 2011 at 12:47 p.m.

I'm curious to see where this goes, as there were some good games for the Wii. But if they plan on showing games like Batman and Darksiders i'm not sure who they are going to impress. Some really neat stuff can be done with that screen. I think it'll be a year in the life cycle before we see anything like that though.

Sticky_Pennieson Dec. 19, 2011 at 12:52 p.m.

I want to be impressed by the Wii U, but I'm continuing to completely not care about it.

Teslaon Dec. 19, 2011 at 12:58 p.m.

"Don't expect much" is kind of implied when it comes to Nintendo related announcements.

Shaanyboion Dec. 19, 2011 at 1:12 p.m.
We're not going to see anything new probably until GDC
flashdimon Dec. 19, 2011 at 1:15 p.m.

I fully expect that enormous controller to get a slimmed down bezel and a bigger screen and for people to cry "BUT I JUST BOUGHT THE FIRST ONE" cause Nintendo.

Warchiefon Dec. 19, 2011 at 1:15 p.m.

"Wii U Appearing at CES Next Month, But Don’t Expect Much" what a perfect title.

ptyson Dec. 19, 2011 at 1:39 p.m.

I hope they're improving the hardware specs on it with all this secrecy.

MormonWarrioron Dec. 19, 2011 at 1:44 p.m.

In other words: no news whatsoever.

I keep having this dream of mine where I'm a super genius and I invent some cost-effective graphics chip that I sell to Nintendo that makes their console kick-butt and then I help them reform their online service, rename the system "Nintendo Elite" and they become #1 in the gaming world once again with great subscription services, exclusive third party deals, etc. And yet I know this thing will come out, there will be like two games I'll want to play on it that are AMAZING and the rest will be total trash years after its release. Like the Wii.

bsavvion Dec. 19, 2011 at 1:46 p.m.

I have a feeling that Nintendo will rename the WiiU

UltorOscarioton Dec. 19, 2011 at 2:04 p.m.
I do not admire Nintendo's role at E3 this year, since it's likely that Sony and MS will likely unveil their new hardware, and Nintendo will be trying to launch the WiiU again, trying desperately to overcome the apathy they instilled last year.

This nonsense sounds similar to a poem I read as a kid.

Dear Ladies and Gentlespoons

I come before you, to stand behind you

to tell you something I know nothing about

On Monday, which is Good Friday

tThere will be a mothers meeting for fathers only

admission is free, you pay at the door

bring your own seats, we'll sit on the floor

Thor_Moleculeson Dec. 19, 2011 at 2:20 p.m.

Show us games, specs, progress, anything!

The tech demos weren't all that impressive during E3 in the first place.

One would think that, 6 months down the line, they'd actually have some games to show off.

BloodOfKinguon Dec. 19, 2011 at 2:26 p.m.

i'd be happy if they just let the thing run existing wii games in HD. would save me messing around with that dolphin emulator.

I hope developers know more about this machine than we do.
Levioon Dec. 19, 2011 at 3:34 p.m.

If it weren't for their first party games, Nintendo would have nothing. These console gimmicks and all 17 of their yearly iterations are just an admission fee to play those games.

Dalaion Dec. 19, 2011 at 3:46 p.m.

So... we'll know more during E3 2012. This changes nothing.

SpikeSpiegelon Dec. 19, 2011 at 4:54 p.m.

I need an HD Mario game. Please launch with it, Nintendo.
