Can a 3DS/XL use a DS flash card to run DS homebrew (NOT roms)

First off, this isn't about playing roms or downloaded games or piracy or any of that, I'm strictly talking about legal, free, open source homebrew applications. But if that still an issue with the terms of service or whatever, just let me know with a PM or reply and I'll close the topic.

I've been using a flash card for my DS to run a few applications like a paint program, a Kanji dictionary/flashcard set, and a calendar. When I get a 3DS (probably an XL), will that stuff still work, or will I need to keep my DS around for doodling/studying/scheduling?
