Today Nintendo finally revealed a new messaging application for the 3DS. The application is called Swapnote and will enable 3DS owners to send messages via StreetPass and SpotPass. Messages can be handwritten, ala PictoChat on the Nintendo DS, but in 3DS's Swapnote you can choose to also send pictures and voice clips.
Messages sent to online friends can be sent even if the other isn't online. Just like the Wii Message system, they'll still receive it as soon as they turn the device on. If they happen to be online they will receive the message instantly.
Swapnote will be released in December 2011 as a free app available to download on the 3DS eShop.
