Remakes of old RPG games - should they be in 2D or 3D?

When our beloved old RPGs are remade for the DS, the developers have a choice I suppose - 2D or 3D.  Given a choice for any of these games, is it preferrable to for 2D or 3D.  Which one looks vetter to you and which generally plays better?

To five an idea of a comparison, I chose Final Fantasy II dor the DS remake and the SNES orginal.

For me, I am going 3D.  I love the look and style and I have found they play very well, especially the camera which can be the Achille's heal of 3D.

It depends on the game and the team doing the work. I think the Final Fantasies look great in 3D, but Chorno Trigger probably was good staying the way it was. If a team isnt sure they can do it right, they should just do a port rather than risking an ugly 3D game.

Chrono Trigger was a port, not remake, no?

Either is fine with me, as long as they do a good job. Remakes better than ports though. I want things to be as good as I remember them, not how they've aged...

Ummm... FF3 for the SNES is actually FF6. The original FF3 was a NES game.

Anyway, it really depends on the source material for me. I don't think a late SNES-era RPG like Chrono Trigger, FF6 and DQ6 would translate well into the graphical style the FF3 and FF4 remakes went for, but they might work in the style of DQ4 and DQ5 (3D backgrounds, 2D sprites).

Still though, if they already looked great on the SNES, I would probably prefer them to just be enhanced ports and not remakes. For NES RPGs and early SNES-era RPGs 3D is fair game, though.

Wow, good catch Axersia. I didnt even notice!
I'd really like to see FFVI done with 3d models though. i can play the 2D version on the GBA any time i want, so i want to see something new. i bet Terra would look great : )

Goddam that is confusing, but you get my meaning and point as the pictures are still 2D old game versus 3D remake.

I like them in 2d, if they make the graphics higher resolution and smoother. I would prefer nice looking 2d graphics and art than poor-looking 3d.

Of  course, 3d games CAN be made to look good on the DS- just look at Dementium:The Ward, etc. It can't be easy though.

Well in some cases that's easier said then done. Getting a hold of the original chrono trigger isn't easy. I would completely agree if all those old great games were readily available on download services like VC, but until then the debate isnt so clear. Perhaps ports should be included with remakes?

2D, on handhelds at least. I prefer 3D games on my DS over 3D games, personally.

3d as long as the core mechanics stay in tact. Sexy graphics mean nothing if game play ends up being broken.

    Or this?

    Ugh, GB's formatting sucks dick.

Anyway, that's using the PSP as an example, which can obviously do 3d much better than the DS, so that's not really valid.

It is a matter of general preference at this point. For the DS I would rather see 2D remakes (even though I don't play them anyway), because the 3d on the DS has never looked good. Some people might like it. Who knows.

There are definately games on the DS that look good in 3D. not all of them, but Golden Sun, Avalon Code, and the FF remakes come to mind. Even Pokemon Diamond and Pearl had 3D environments that generally looked pretty nice, and that's all just RPGs. The PSP obviously does 3D better, but the DS is more than capable.

I do that for outside sources, but it's totally pointless for images that are in GB's database already.

Like I said, it's an individual preference. I don't really think any of them look "good" in 3D, although some (like the ones you mentioned) are passable.

New 2D games can look fantastic, nostalgia or no nostalgia.

I think they should be 2D with 3D cameras.  In other words, 2D character but in a 3D world where I can move the camera around to that I can see what I need to see.

Personally I'd prefer high quality 3D (like on 360 or PS3) over anything else, but I realize that's not realistic most of the time.

On DS, I like it when they put some effort into a remake.  Making a simple port isn't worth it to me.

Whilst I love a good 3D game on the DS, I cannot argue against that point.  I would also assume that the game can be made much bigger or deeper in 2D.  Yes, well made 2D is gorgeous to look at.  Perhaps if the company has not got the budget for a really well made #d game, they shouldn't bother.  Square-Enix know how to do it right.

With 3D in general  though, the worst 3d games to look at are the PS1 types.  The characters are just ugly.  When they remake games and they look like the cute chibi style employed by Square-Enix, they are brilliant.  Resident Evil is not an attractive game that is essentially a port.  I full remake with better character design would have been better - perhaps in The World Ends With You style if you know what I mean (strong style and colour).

I suppose we have ignored 2.5D games like New Super Mario Bros and many others.  This is an excellent compromise for some games.
