With DSi Virtual Console on its way at some point, it is time to reflect on the Gameboy Original and think about the great games it had and which ones we would like to see work its way way on to your DSi.

With that in mind, I will take this retrospective look at each genre and the games that were good and and worthy a download if they made it onto the system.

Quite a selection of good to great classic Game Boy action games.  Which ones do you remember playing and which ones do you want the most?

My best memories from the Action genre back in the day are of Bill & Ted and The Amazing Spiderman.  I played those a lot and they kept me busy on the long flight to Canada in the early 90's.  I still have them and dig them out every so often.  They are still fun.  I would love them on the DS though, it just makes it more convenient.

    Legends
    II: Belmont's Revenge
    Adventure

Maybe even I would give them a go  :-)

    Would love these one's:

Mystical Ninja, I have all the games except this one right now. Would love to play it finally
Batman was so good on Gameboy, so much fun. I liked the tons of little blocks you had to shoot and the cool weaponry you had. I remember the music being great.
Bart Simpson was a cute charming platformer, nice and chunky graphics
    Super Mario Land
Megaman 1 and 2, for collection purposes more than anything
    Castlevania Legends
    Super Mario Land 2
    Wario Land
Balloon Kid, loved it, too cute, would love to play it again, would be great to see on DSi Ware in colour too.
    Kirby's Dreamland
Duck Tales was yet another quality Capcom -Disney game. Great use of black I recall, they created some cool lighting effects

    Hyper Lode Runner

Bomberman GB, always looking to add to my Bomberman collection, I have never played this version.

Bonk, love him, never played the GB game, I have all the VC games including all the Zonk's

Never knew there was a Smurfs game on GB, I loved the Smurfs, as well as their sea dwelling cousings, the Snorks
    Pacman and Ms Pacman
Contra: the Alien Wars, action on Gameboy did not get much better
Dig Dug, loved the arcade game, never played this version
Snow Bros, think Bubble Bobble with Snowmen, Capcom developed
Gargoyle's Quest, the best platformer/RPG on the system.

Here's hoping the announce something at E3 concerning Virtual Gameboy. I doubt they will be including other formats as some have suggested.

I added Snow Bros for you LS, but not Gargoyle's Quest.  Let me explain.

I am working of allgame.com    It makes it easy for me as they set everything up by category and then sub category.  Thing is, they class Gargoyle's Quest under Shooter/Platform Shooter.  It does mention the Rpg elements.  Rated highly as well.  I know you are most likely right (why would I not trust your knowledge), but I am going to keep it in the shooter category when I get there.

Good choices in your list though.  Really shows, just from one console and one category the depth of games that could potentially make it to a DSi VC.

I would say it's more of action platformer than shooter...

Do you remember the Snorks at all? :)

Snorks rings no bells at all LS.

I just checked my GB games and I do have a Gargoyle game - Gargoyles.

I just fired up the GBA SP.  Got to love that music  :-)  It has just gone through the story.  Even the noise it makes when the text goes by ...... man, it has been a  while.  Okay, I have no idea how this version varies from Quest, but it certainly plays like a platform shooter.  Okay, the fire thing on the top of a tree killed me.  I lose  :-)

Hard not to.  I want to space out all the potential games by system and category, but it is hard not to want to do them all at once.  This retros[ective is surprising me and I only just started.

I just figured from the list, I have:
    Donkey Kong
    Battletoads
    Hyper Load Runner
    Gargoyles
    Duck Tales
    The AAmazing Spiderman
    Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
    Batman

I never really got into the Gameboy until the GBA, but there is 19 games in my small collection for the GB.

One thing I just noticed and it is off topic.  I haven't played or recharged the GBA SP for probably 12 months.  The battery is still working.  If I charge the PSP and leave it for a week, the damn battery is dead.  Why is that?

Operation C/Probotector, the Super Mario Land series, Link's Awakening, Donkey Kong '94 are essentials. I'm curious about Castlevania Legends and Elevator Action.

The PSP's batteries don't hold a charge as long as the GBA SP, it's a common thing with rechargable batteries like Ni-Mh batteries and Li-Ion batteries. The GBA SP holds it longer, I don't know how though.

What they NEED to do is have Gameboy Camera on there and have it take advantage of the DSi camera.  That would be awesome.

Whaaa, you added Aladdin? Have you played that game recently? Well, I have. It takes a whole second to jump and it only uses maybe 3 frames for the animation. Sure, I have fond memories of it as well (well, actually I don't -- it was horribly frustrating), but it really doesn't hold up well (unlike that Aladdin game by Capcom).

My favorite platformers at the time were Kirby's Dream Land (easiest game ever -- probably beat it a few dozen times), Adventure Island II and Donkey Kong, but I didn't own a whole lot else.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger  :-)

I didn't have Aladdin so I can't comment, but I just pickeed the eyes out of the group based on scores the site used.  It was in the 'average' range.  I think many of the games will disappoint with the passage of a LOT of years.  They are not games you can bother playing for long periods like the games of today.  The Nintendo classic titles will always be the best, especially platformers.

It has made me interested in trying out the old games again.  I don't think I got much past the Rhino & bats in the train subway in The Amazing Spiderman, but it was still fun.  Did I mention that I tend to be crap at most games?

I'll wait for Pt. 2 Gameboy - RPG. I've been reluctant to buy a DS/DSi, but if the DSi VC goes live and they have Dragon Warrior Monsters up for grabs, that might get me to dish out the bones for this.
