So I've been playing a lot of No Man's sky like most of you have. It was super interesting at first, but once I got the loop of the game down, it really started to just feel like this slog, where discovering a new planet felt like driving to work.

That is not to say I didn't have enjoyment getting to see those new planets. It's the whole reason I decided to buy the game, even while knowing exactly what I was getting myself into. However, I misjudged how long I could keep it up.

A few options came up, I could return the game, but I really didn't want to give up the exploration aspect of the game. I was just sitting there thinking I could return it, but also thinking about seeing what kind of planet would be in the next star system over.

So I came to my next and final option, cheating. I don't like cheating on the first run through of a game. I want to experience it as it was intended. After beating it though, all bets are off. I'll mod/cheat the hell out of anything if it'll let me. Now anyway, I decide to search for some trainers, and sure enough there were a few already out there. I downloaded one. I felt real dirty.

It was the usual collection of stuff, your infinite health and ammo or whatever. Then got to the game specific stuff, like what I think is unlimited resource stacks, no radiation, and stuff that basically made the game an entirely care free walking simulator. I didn't want that. I didn't like mining for stuff, but I do like upgrading my multi-tool and then getting to use it and have it feel like a whole new weapon. So infinite resources and no damage/radiation where out.

What really caught my eye though were those fat ass ships coming in and out of port on the space stations. I came across one that had 30 inventory slots. That may as well be infinite the early game. I had to have it, sadly it cost 3.5 million units. I was only sitting at about 600,000 at the time so that wasn't happening. However, what also wasn't happening was me flying back and forth to the damn space station to dump my shit constantly. That was no fun. It had to change.

Infinite money here we go! I activated it, and my money slowly started to crawl up faster and faster, until it stopped at 99,999,999. Here is where I decided that instead of infinite money, I just gave my self one of those EA time booster packs and deactivated the cheat. I was able to buy two more ships which now I sit at 43 inventory slots, and a newer hyper-drive (that I was close to building anyway) that really lets me jump around.

Again I felt super dirty doing this, but I stared at my gigantic inventory, and my god it was beautiful. I stopped there because I simply didn't have enough money to buy the next ship, which cost upwards around 50,000,000 creds. So now I got a space truck and it can hold a lot of stuff. To be honest I'm not moving any faster to the center of the galaxy or anything like that. I just now get to spend way more time focusing on exploring and finding shit rather than keeping and eye out for a trading post or hoping a shelter has a marketplace just so you can free up one or two slots of inventory. Of course this always happens right before you find a kick ass upgrade that requires 200 of the thing you just sold all of. Now that is all in the past, and space is super fun again.

    JUST LOOK AT IT!!! FUN!
    JUST LOOK AT IT!!! FUN!

So yeah, whatever. I'm sure some of you are offended I cheated, and you wouldn't be wrong. I offended myself in doing so, but I don't care. I do care that that the game is super fun for me again, and I offer this as a suggestion to those who are in the same boat I was. People who want to explore but not worry about resource management or constantly hitting roadblocks (self imposed I guess) because you are just short a mineral or two for an upgrade. Sure that's a large part of the game, but that part sucks.

Oh yeah and did I mention there are cheats for infinite jet pack and super speed?

Those are preeeeety neat. Just be careful or you might end up in less than savory predicaments:

    FUN!
    FUN!

tl:dr Inventory cheats/mods are always awesome.

So you modded the game to rebalance its progression system in a way that made the game more fun for you to play. Seeing as it's a single player game and your modding doesn't harm the experience of other players, I see nothing dirty or objectionable here. Good for you for taking ownership over your game experience and reshaping it as you see fit.

This is exactly what I would do if I got the game. From my experience playing 3h~ on a friends copy I decided the game just wasn't for me. But if I could circumvent the incredibly limiting inventory and forced gathering to just go strolling... This suddenly turns into a rainy day/sale buy instead of no buy.

Don't feel bad about it, you just made the game play the way you wanted it to. You found something hampering your enjoyment, and fixed it. Without going overboard. Good job I say!

I was kinda curious if you could really fuck up and end up off of a planet without your ship and how the game would handle that...

I don't like the item management aspect of this game. I mean, yes it's the progression of the game, but I really dislike having to dump something I may need later because it's taking up space now. I'm still at the earlier bits of the game, and I know it will become less of a problem later, but it's making it hard to start it up right now.

So if I could cheat that aspect out of the game, then I probably would.

Just so you know not every game is for everyone. You don't have to play it.

@sagesebas: I like the sense of exploration, and the traversal. Over all I like the game, but this one aspect is a pain for me. I'm a hoarder in video games, and considering the breadth of supplies you can obtain, it's a turn off for me.

@wolf_blitzer85: Did you create the cheat yourself or did you find it elsewhere?

I would also like to cheat. Are you using a trainer from somewhere? I would really love a way to move faster on land, either a faster sprint or jetpack would be so nice to have.

@casepb: @mattchops: You can just search for No Man's Sky trainer and some will pop up, but the one I am personally using is this guy: http://mrantifun.net/index.php?threads/no-mans-sky-trainer.8914/ There are four different versions and I've been using the 15 cheat one. The other one adds more cheats like everything translated and sentinels never going into alert, but I feel like that takes away way too much from the experience. Just be prepared for super speed though as it gets really crazy on bumpy terrain. You start bouncing uncontrollably all over the place, but at least it seems like fall damage isn't a problem so bounce away.

I should also add that I am using this with the GOG version. It works just fine with Steam, but for GOG you need to start the game first, then open the trainer with admin privileges. When you hit the corresponding hotkey for a cheat, a nice lady's voice should tell you the cheat it activated.

I say go for it, the best part is you get to go wild with your current ship upgrades, so have fun turning those damn pirates into space dust. And yeah while I still have a decent amount of inventory management to do, as it's still really easy to fill up space, when you sell stuff you can get rid of a few stacks worth and still have a decent amount of material to not worry about coming up too short. Still gotta do a little searching and mining, but my focus is more on rare stuff now. Shooting rocks is so two days ago.

Okay so I totally found a good use for super speed. Using it to get around normally gets to be a little silly, however knowing that I have it has really encouraged me to go out and explore harder. I was always afraid to journey too far away from the ship since going back would take just as long. Now I can just venture out at normal speed as far as I want without that nagging feeling of why I am even doing this anymore.

Seriously, don't feel bad about that. The inventory is probably one of the most frustrating parts of the game imo. It actively gets in the way of the cool exploring part.

Using Cheat Engine to get infinite stamina and jetpack was one of the single best decisions I made during my short time with No Man's Sky. Unfortunately, not even Cheat Engine was enough to make the game fun for more than a couple of hours.

I'm waiting for the mod that allows your ships guns to mine minerals from the sky. Then I might get this game when its $20 or less.

I think I'm going to have to try this. I can't stand the inventory as is, it reminds me of Resident Evil 1 ink ribbons, oh the horror.

This is actually a pretty apt description of how I felt. "Shit forgot ribbon! Gotta go back 4 rooms but I don't really want to look at another goddamn door right now. Wait where the hell is the safe room? Okay gotta pull up the map...okay cool just down the hall. GODDAMMIT THE FUCKING HANDLE IS BROKEN!!!!!!"

At some point certain games systems weight them down in so far as 'the fun' goes. Like, no as it turns out running slow in the beginning only to get faster upgrades is not rewarding. It just means the early game sucks and the late game, where I will spend much less of my time, no longer sucks. Like, if you play any Bethesda Game on the pc and do not immediately add 5000 to your weight limit (and are not playing a hard-core rp character), your doing yourself an injustice.

I use Sunless Sea as my prime go-to example. Great game..story. Gameplay? Eh. Hack those files, find the money code, give yourself ten times more then you'll ever spend seeing all the sights, presto now its a story-driven game instead of a "gotta spend 30 minutes doing busy work.."

The difference between minecraft creative vs survival, when what you really want to do is build. And, yah. I think I (and lots of other people) have seen enough of no-mans-sky to find 'ohh, massive inventories you say? appealing. Same with a lot of the less fun stuff. I think I've tromped around enough planets now to have seen all of the randomly generated '?'. I've got plenty more to discover, but its the systems requiring "10 more hours of grind please" standing in my way now.
