    Hey everyone!

    I am really considering to upgrade my hard drive since I have 60GB...

    I am considering this:

    Western Digital 1 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD10EADS [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]

    Although Im not sure if it works with the PS3... anyone there is sure it will work?

    That's a PC hard drive you have listed there, the PS3 does not support PC hard drives, they're too big (3.5 inch diameter)

    make sure you have the following:

    SATA 2.5 inch laptop drive
    5400rpm
    the biggest size that laptop drives come in are at 500gb, which is more than enough.

    western digital do a drive just like it.

    5400rpm is the recommended speed, it's not known how the PS3 handles drives that work at faster speeds,

    RhombusOfTerror is on point.  It's got to be the laptop drives.  And stick with the 5400 rpm drives, I wouldn't go with the 7200 rpm drives since, although they may read and write faster, they also produce more heat.  I was more concerned about heat than speed when I replaced my 60gb with a 5400 rpm 320gb (back when 320 was the largest available drive).

    Oh, and be careful unscrewing those screws, they strip very easily.

    If you're unsure about the process, I think both IGN and Gamespot have vids/articles on how to do it.

    Don't forget that the instruction manual tells everyone how to do it too.
    Youtube has videos of how to do it, a ton of places do actually.

    7200RPM laptop harddrives also tend to cost a lot in terms of GB/$. Would you rather slight increase in loads or tons of space?

    @ssjviviano:
    One of the articles I linked to addressed heat, they said there was no appreciable differences in temperature with a 7200rpm drive.
    Still, I agree with you - trust Joystiqs bloggers with the future of your game system? I think not.

    I've been looking for a drive upgrade as well. Right now, I've found this one (click 'Specifikationer' to view the specs).
    Would that be a decent choice for an upgrade? I'm not very heavy on photos or music or that kind of stuff (yet!), but my 40 GB drive is proving to be not enough for the amount of games I have now, and with a 500 GB I shouldn't have to worry about that sort of stuff again.

    What? I'm just asking if the linked drive is a decent one for a PS3, because I don't want to end up wasting my money on crap.

    I have. Other than removing the screws, it was a cinch. But be careful not to strip the screws, because they can be pretty tight.

    @MrCellophane: It looks fine.

    I have removed and upgraded my HDD.  On some consoles the screws are really tight and weak so it is very easy to strip them.  I had to take my console to Ace Hardware so they can remove the screws.  I will never forget that day.  Anyways you need a laptop HDD, which is 2.5in.  I would recommend Seagate, but Western Digital is also very good.  You don't need to buy one that is 5,400 RPM.  Mine was a 320gb 7,200RPM and works better than the ones that spin a 5,400 since the PS3 reads them faster so loads times and such won't be as long.  It won't be a dramatic difference like where it shaves off 30sec of loading time, but it will shave some off.

    Get a 7200rpm drive. Don't listen to those saying otherwise. I have tested both a 500GB 5400rpm Seagate and 500GB 7200rpm Seagate drive. There IS a difference in speed and the latter does NOT produce more heat. They did some years ago, but not anymore. Buy a 7200 drive; don't make the same mistake that I did. And get the one with the most cache if you can; I read this is an even bigger factor to speed than the rpm.
