don't understand the hate for gta 4, loved that game even replayed that game recently and still loved it, the story and characters made that game.

Yeah i don't get it either. I do think that the game may not has aged well recently but I still think its a great game. HOW CAN ANYONE HATE ON BRUCIE

i mean thats just progress of videogames is why gameplay wise it doesn't hold up.

but the story and characters are still sharp.

and exactly, how can people hate brucie? i believe he won giantbombs award for character they would party with, i could be wrong, but he was a nominee

and then even jeff was extremely hot on gta 4

The story is what I came to see. And I’m having trouble putting my feelings for this game’s story into words right now. I’ll spare you the fumbling and just say that it’s probably the greatest game story of all time, both in content and how it’s integrated into the rest of the game.

All those early reviews, where everyone tossed out the highest score they could give, left me scratching my head a bit in the game’s early hours. But I get it now. I understand

that's a weird choice for this week's bombcast picture

I'm actually playing GTA4 right now as I never actually finished the game. What it's doing for me is that I'm getting super stoked for GTAV and making me realize how great San Andreas was.

On its own it's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, I just wish it had waaay more character customization, real estate to buy and that sort of stuff. I've just unlocked the last part of the city, have about half a million $ in my pocket and there's absolutely nothing to spend it on. I want to OWN the city and collect cars and for godsakes I want a badass beard and a fedora.

The thumbnail for this Bombcast just got me hype as fuck, then sad when I realized there would be a bunch of GTA V talk without Ryan.

Goddamn but Drew's casual adventures in everything make me feel like a sedentary fucker. Love hearing what that duder's up to on the regular.

Yeah, it makes me feel like I don't do enough with my time.

Kinda bummed to hear Vinny had such trouble with his AI companions in The Bureau. I was playing on hard or whatever and only had them go down once or twice the entire game. They definitely weren't useful for getting kills on their own, but by the end I'd come up with a good few strategies that involved all three members' powers. e.g. Use the scout to throw a distraction then use his crit, mind control an Elite Muton at the start who's the furthest back, lift the snipers out of cover and have the drone with lift take care of the tech commanders, have the engineer set up his rocket turret behind low cover in center field and throw his mine on the side closest to us while he's sent out to flank one side which would funnel the enemies together for the scout to call an airstrike on, etc. Once I had my strategies down, the game became a breeze but the combat still managed to be a ton of fun, which I wasn't expecting.

As for the story, it felt like it had a decent progression to it up until the last hour or two (though it was never all that interesting or well written). It basically felt at that point like they'd originally planned the game to be 15 hours longer than it was and tried to cram all of its ideas into that last hour. It seems most people don't feel the same way, considering the review scores, but I did end up really enjoying my time with it; it just kind of seemed like the combat never clicked for most people like it managed to for me.

Edit: Also, Brad, if you don't want to drive, use the taxis. Though it sounds more like you're just not interested in what GTA is at all anymore than actually just having trouble with the driving.

gta 4 was never about getting that high up, they had always talked about that game's theme being "rags to better rags"

but some of the trailers for gta 5 hint at real estate stuff and a possible mini stock market. so you might definitely get what you want in the new one.

People harp on and on about how much they hate when companies don't change their games, but when Rockstar goes and changes the formula everyone gets up in arms. There was a lot of dumb shit in San Andreas that basically made me stop playing after beating the campaign - the terrible RPG stuff especially with eating, the really questionable graphics, and the beyond terrible auto-aim. Maybe because I played GTA4 long after release on PC when a lot of the issues had been patched, but the gameplay felt great, the story really resonated with me, and Liberty City felt alive in a way that no other game has really matched. If you listen to the GOTY podcast, I felt the same way the Jeff felt about that story. It remains one of my favorite for addressing the immigrant story, having a cast of characters that felt like real people I had known when I was kid, and just being great. No other game has really done that, and the funny stuff didn't throw me off. Anyone who has lived in a city knows that a lot funny and fucked up stuff co-exists out there. I never had any problems with missions glitching, and with the right group of friends the multiplayer is really fun (better than the MGS4 multiplayer thats for sure.)

I'm quite biased though - Steam claims I put in 650 hours in GTA4, mostly because of mods and multiplayer. I also haven't touched the game since they announced GTA5. I want a fresh view.

WoW talk always feels weird when the bomb crew talks about it. I was an avid MMO fan and it never did anything that I never saw before by the time it came out, it only did everything well enough to be a robust package. It was a Jack of all trades of MMORPG, I would say. It was a surprise to me it did so well, and popularized monthly fees in MMOs that came after.

In the free MMORPGs domain which I follow, there has been games where they pursued

(Those are just personal examples of MMOs I played)

a non-loading large open overworld(Perfect World, FlyFF), active real-time combat(Dragon Nest, Vindictus, Mabinogi), randomnized dungeon-crawling(Mabinogi again), in-depth pet raising and gathering (Monster & Me, Fairyland I, II), turned-based strategy(see previous game examples) as well as MMOs for genres that aren't normally MMOs (KartRider, a mario-kart-like MMO, Space Cowboy Online, a PVP-intense combat aircraft MMO, Fishing Champ, a MMO about fishing, Pi Story, an arcade beat-em up MMO, and more examples that I can't think of right now). There was also another free MMORPG that came out years ago that did the FF5 job system, I forgot the name.

They're not all quality MMORPGs as a package, but a lot of them does some few things better than I would say WoW did in my opinion and felt a lot more enjoyable as an experience too. Some had pretty good storytelling too. As ironic as asian MMOs are known to be grindy and same-ish, a bunch of them actually brought variety to MMOs. None of these MMOs has solved the grinding problem, though.

Vinny's right, though, all MMOs comes down to numbers and HP and being better than the others at poking at stuff and being poked at.

Edited by development

@rollout: I was addicted to Perfect World for awhile. Is it wrong that I think that game's super ridiculous and superfluous high + double-jump made that game at least 50% better? For some reason it added a lot, and it's a shame you can't find that anywhere else.

Thank fuckin God they discussed GTA IV's terrible gameplay. Everything that was good about that game was non-interactive stuff.

Heck, here's a quick example - I was in a chase mission behind some dudes I had to kill. I was driving fairly well (considering the terrible bloody handling model). Their car was ramming through traffic left and right, with absolutely no signs of slowing down from the collisions. Whereas my car would always spin out when I hit a car or any other object in the environment. The game made it clear that I was only allowed to catch up when both cars reached a designated spot.

This goes against everything an open world game is supposed to be. They fucked the gameplay in order to create a false "cinematic" experience.

It wasn't a glitch, by the way. Not only did this happen multiple times during this mission, but it happened in a few other chase missions as well. Hell, it probably happened in other missions as well, but I wasn't close enough to see those for myself.

And don't even get me started on the goddamn "maintain your distance" segments and the lack of good checkpoints.

Don't get me wrong - I love the TV shows, the radio segments, the standup shows, the cutscenes, etc. I just wish I didn't have to play it.

Yeah, the story was good. Yes, the characters are awesome. But man... I can't think of a game less deserving of all the praise it got.

I really hope GTA V's gameplay is better. From a few of the trailers, it seems like the vehicle handling is better. But let's see some reviews first. Hopefully they do improve how it plays. If not, Rockstar should stick with making mock TV shows.

P.S. I completed the game, it wasn't hard. It was just tedious, repetitive, unfair enemy vehicles, etc. etc. Pretty much the textbook method of implementing difficulty the wrong way.

Edited by mrfluke

@sravankb: its the same way how stuff like walking dead and gone home get enormous praise is why gta 4 got the praise it did, the best aspects of that game (story, characters) overshadowed the ok, aspects of the game (the gameplay)

sounds like you had a very rough time playing gta 4, honestly didnt have that experience, playing it was fine.

I remember when Vinny wasn't a dad. It's odd now to hear about his awesome adventures with his son. It's also odd that they are the thing that really stuck out in the this podcast to me. Listened to him talk about his adventures with Max. Totally sucks that Max burnt himself. Made me feel sad. Vinny seems like a great dad.

What was the Saints Row IV through-line reveal they guys were talking about?

Posted by jasius

I've tried this on Chrome and Firefox, when I download the MP3 all is well but this week in particular after the first 10 seconds of the stream the audio goes lower and gets muffled. Weird it happens on both browsers for me, even more weird that the first few seconds are solid, but the end part of the intro go low.

Edited by Vuud

Will there be a live quick look of GTA5? Since there's no PC version that's as close as I'll get.

On a whim I got GTA4 on a steam sale, just to see what the hubbub was about. Then I got to that dating game bullshit and thought "WTF am I doing?" and turned it off.

And Red Dead has given me some faith that Rockstar finally understands how to make games that don't control like absolute shit.

Brad, you're probably going through a rough time. FF14 is really well crafted and full of fun incidental dialogue and music cues and there's story all over the place. Nostalgia will blind you, you can't look always to the past. Read things, look around, discover... wonder can be evoked, but it's a state of mind.

I love stupid, I have most Schwarzenegger movies in several video formats, think Just Cause 2 is great, and while I do have a deep seeded true love for all things GTA, don't peg me as a serious guy. Having said that, I can't shake the feeling that Saints Row is just so goddamn stupid and derivative, and i don't see why the fact that they have the sense of humor of an 11 year old gets them so much love from you very respected gaming journalists. The driving is floaty and the shooting and body physics are extremely primitive, i dont know man, i dont know.

Damn son.. Thats deep lol But totally true. He says there is no story or it sucks yet he isn't reading anything. He says the world is flat and boring, yet to a lot of people it seems the world is vibrant, detailed, and engrossing. He hasn't said anything about the music, which is fantastic. The level of detail in the dialogue and all the random hilarious overhead speech bubbles on random NPCs is fantastic. Tons of Final Fantasy references and creatures. I don't care if you say that its not very innovative for the genre, but its a damn better Final Fantasy game then 13 was.

Just sounds like Brad is beyond jaded at this point. It's one thing to say a game isn't to your style but to call it out on being boring and bland with no story and hes made it to level 9 and has probably only seen like two areas? Plus who isn't enthusiastic about a new GTA game coming out?

I still love you and your sexy voice Brad :)

Regarding MMOs:

The reason the "holy trinity" of Tank/ Healer/ DPS seems like the only possible way to make an MMO today is because most MMOs have systems that boil down to little more than dealing and receiving damage in a vacuum. Positioning rarely matters, mobility rarely matters, aiming and execution of moves almost never matters-- you activate your skill and do X damage, and your opponent hits you back for Y damage.

In that situation, the only roles you really can play are to hit a guy, get hit by a guy, or heal a guy after he gets hit.

The way MMOs grow beyond that is to grow beyond that. To add higher levels of interaction to the combat and the world that make position and movement important-- and force you to do more than click a button and watch your bars.

If positioning mattered, you could have characters that drop onto enemies from above, or charge and ram into them, and would need to find an open area or high ground to make a good attack. If mobility mattered, you could have fast-moving "diversion" characters that would draw aggro, yes, but then actually dodge attacks-- rather than absorbing them-- by running, jumping, and climbing around the arena.

A more active game has more options.

So, when MMOs start giving you more interesting actions to perform between hitting and getting hit, then there will be a wider array of roles to create and be filled. And that is the day people like me who don't give a shit about MMOs anymore might be willing to give them a shot.

Same thing will happen with GTA5 ... as it does with most popular games (Bioshock Infinite ...). People will play it and love it, one week later it "was not that good", 2 months later it was a bad game.

For me the most interesting stuff about GTA IV was off to the side. Going into that one internet cafe for the first 5 or 6 times will get you unique dialogue between Nico and the lady working there. The amount of dialogue they recorded for when you hang out with other characters. That one girlfriend that can stalk you or the other one that will write up on her blog about where you last took her on a date. The alternate dialogue you get when you replay a mission. All of the strangers you can meet and their little bite sized stories. How the overweight cops won't bother chasing their suspect as opposed to the fit cops who'll chase that motherfucker down, and a lot of other nice little details like that, which are mostly absent from other open world games.

Haha ending and opening songs don't match. I love Jeff, but he produces some lazy podcasts.

Yea, that's what killed GTA4 for me. I mean, there's not much point to an open world game with missions that have zero flexibility to them.

If you replay a mission often enough, you'll notice that even the traffic is scripted for some of the chase missions. It's like the devs were terrified that something chaotic would happen in an open world game; heaven forbid.

It's not an unplayable game by any means, but there are a number of severe faults that cannot be ignored (and I honestly felt severely misled by the plethora of perfect reviews the game got at the time).

Posted by dr_mantas

I remember being disappointed in GTA IV. It was decent, but I much preferred Vice City and San Andreas. And I even enjoyed Saints Row 2 a hell of a lot more.

It was lauded by critics, maybe some of them are turning now or something.

But it's not revisionist, at least not for me.

Several times in the podcast it sounded like Vinny was about to barf, or was having trouble holding back some serious burping. I don't know why that stuck out to me, or why I'm commenting on it now, but there ya have it.
