@thekitkatshuffler: The trash really comes out in these comment sections, yikes. Feel sorry for whoever on the GB staff has to go through and read these.
One of the things I dislike most about a lot of games criticism is the way the JRPG genre is talked about by people who have a heavy nostalgia for 8 and 16 bit eras. There have been SO many good games since that era in that genre that have been experimental and pushed it forward. They've tried new, weird things and there's so much more to them than you'd know if you're only judging it by the immediate dismissal of the genre beyond those eras. The small DQXI segment here was just demoralizing, as it usually is whenever GB tries to tackle JRPGs from the late 90's to now.
Kinda thinking about picking this up. I follow the NHL really closely but just haven't bought an NHL game since like...the 2K $20 days. My team just got Karlsson so I kind of want to play the game just to play the Sharks lol.
If you care about Yoko Taro's whole thing you should definitely go back and play the original Nier. It's a bummer at times because the combat is so mediocre but it has toooooons of heart the exact same way Automata does even if the focus is a bit different.
Tbh I'm kinda bummed how few people are going back to playing his older stuff after Automata. His earlier work deserves recognition even if it's rougher across the board.
Saw this movie when I was younger and totally loved it. Read the book too which I also really enjoyed.
The last time I saw it was a few years back when they did a limited screening of it at a theater in San Francisco. I got wild high with a friend beforehand and boy that was a terrible decision. I was in literal tears the whole time, crying my eyes out about why these kids were forced to murder each other. Meanwhile the rest of the audience was laughing at every single brutal kill and I felt like I was in a room full of disgusting human beings. In my mind I still knew the thematic reasoning and message behind the story but it was the first time the absolutely brutality of the imagery really got to me.
Anyway, looking forward to watching it again for the first time in like 6 years with the Beast crew.
