Top 5 SNES music

These games have tunes that are stuck in my head to this day.

List items

  • No 5. I included this one just for the Ken and Guile stage tracks, which simply ROCK. Both these tracks have excellent melodies which I always felt could be pop hits if properly arranged and set to lyrics.

  • No 4. Not only did the graphics reach new heights, the audio fidelity seemed improved as well, as old "Cranky" Kong's gramophone was bumped off by DK's stereo. The synth has a nice reverberant quality and the obligatory drums have good bass. I used to pause the game just to listen to the soundtrack on some levels.

  • No.3 The polyphonic, rhythmic quality of the music of this game is invigorating and atmospheric. A great demonstration of the SNES' audio capabilities.

  • No. 2 One of the few videogame series I ever noticed to use the principle of leitmotif (albeit to limited extend). The "Mana" theme introduced at the title screen can be heroic or sad, touching or awe-inspiring. It is the highlight of the score and very memorable, becoming synonymous with the title like the "Raiders March" to Indiana Jones. The remaining music is great all-round. The fact that it does not get annoying or repetitive throughout the long quest is an indication of its quality.

Although all music tracks in this game are great, what especially stands out is the final one over the end credits, which is just majestic. Hearing this started my interest in classical music and movie soundtracks. The composer, Hajime Hirasawa, unfortunately left Nintendo to start his own music company, a move which I consider to be a great loss to videogame music.
