Worried about the Silent Hill 8 Soundtrack? Probably shouldn't be

As a huge fan of the Silent Hill series, I understand that a lot of people (myself included) were concerned with the fact that Akira Yamaoka left Konami to go work with EA and Suda on their newest game. After all, how could you replace the guy who came up with Theme of Laura, Promise, or any number of Silent Hill songs (which could take up an entire blog themselves with their sheer awesomeness.)

They announced that Daniel Licht, who's primarily known for his work as the composer for the awesome serial-killer show Dexter, would be taking over Yamaoka's position. Kotaku just posted a sample of his music for the game and I must say that it sounds pretty damn good.

You can definitely hear some influences from the Dexter soundtrack, but it's looking pretty promising. If he can hit the right mood (which he seems to be doing well, if the clip is an indication), then I'm pretty damn excited.

Yeah, Dan will do fine, I fell so much in love with Dexter's OST that I bought it instantly. I just hope Akira is back for more Silent Hill after this. Either way, I'm very intrigued to hear more of his work with Mary Elizabeth in Shadows of the Damned :)

There isn't enough backwards recorded screeching sounds, scraping metal, drops of fetid water, and doors slamming open and shut.

Listen to the track Macabre from the original Silent Hill.  It plays right at the start of the game, when Harry is searching down the alley for Cheryl.  That opening 5 minutes, and that track in particular, are the entire reason why Silent Hill became huge.  I've rarely seen a game start as strong.

@obcdexter: I'm fairly certain her and Akira are still working together on Suda/EA's game, they're just no longer working with Konami. So there'll still be more of them in the future, which is great. I'm a huge fan of Mary's work.

Yeah, he won't have problems coming up with a good enough score to fit the mood, but I'm already missing Akira and Mary collaborations. These days are over, it seems ...
