  • Much of The Beginner's Guide is reminiscent of 2013's Gone Home, which I liked more than any other game that year and told everyone I could to play it. Similarly if you have any inkling of love for interactive experiences or creativity in general and have about 2 hours to spare, you owe it to yourself to play The Beginner's Guide.

  • Playing Mushroom 11 reminds me of that old, often-mocked quote from Miles Davis, "It's not the notes you play; it's the notes you don't play." Like jazz, determining where not to put things is equally, if not more important that where to put them when playing Mushroom 11. There is no way to directly manipulate your "character", an amorphous mushroom; rather, your only tool is an eraser that causes pieces of the mushroom to shift, somewhat randomly and without your direct control, to another area not covered by the eraser. As long as it is touching a solid surface, the mushroom will grow in different directions as part of it is erased.

  • Despite being pretty popular in the N64-PS1 era, over time 3D platformers have become demonized as dull collect-athons, games that can each feel like a series of busy work. What's surprising then is that one of Grow Home's greatest strengths is that its one and only goal is to collect 100 shiny blue crystals. This simplicity extends to its visuals as well but not to its detriment. Polygon edges are visible on every object, and shading is as simple as it gets. However, these limited, technically conservative graphics mixed with a huge, coherent world and large draw distances make the visuals exceptionally striking.
