Game Development Meta Games

"Games are awesome, but what if there was a game about making games?" This is the near exact phrase uttered by anybody whom developed these games or considered the meta idea for a "unique game". The amount of these titles are a bit sparse, but isn't new if you look closely. The first release of this genre appears to be Game Dev Story, release in Japan on PC, a country not necessarily known for PC releases or simulators. It wouldn't be surprising to me if the first game of this type was a Flash game or some sort of simple HTML game. Game Development games have clearly become a genre thanks to mobile gaming and the Steam store, so it is time to start cataloging them.

List items

  • Game Dev Story was most popular on the iOS platform, but surprisingly, the game originally release in Japan according to Wikipedia and Giant Bomb. You can find a Windows style version of this game on Youtube.

  • Gamebiz is probably the first English release of a Game development game. It has appearance that looks more like spreadsheets, text boxes, and charts, making it not have not as much "charm" as most other game dev tycoon games. This series is pretty obscure in the genre and I only stumbled upon it via a related games list for Game Dev Tycoon.

  • This game is honestly the reason why I made this list. While the game was a bit lacking in its original release, the developers improved the game by allowing the player to research their released games to see why it scored the way it did, giving the player a better idea how to develop future games. Greenheart also added mod support, allowing you to change the types and amounts of systems and topics (genres) or when certain systems would release. GDT is much easier to recommend since you are no longer completely reliant on using wikis or guides to succeed.

I was a bit surprised there was not a list of game development games, so here we are.
