@ToadRunner:
Never said HD/Husky are all about brilliant analysis or that they hold a candle to Day9 in that regard. I just find it a lot more convenient to sit down and watch a few high level games on youtube than to sift through replay packs.

SC2 is one of those games where you'll probably learn a lot more by watching good people play than you will by playing yourself.  You can find a lot of good casts on youtube, for example:

Lots of those players seem intimidatingly good at first, but as soon as you start picking up on what they are doing and why, you can improve your game considerably.

Steam has been pretty good about letting people add their retail-bought CD keys to the service. From what I understand, you can actually buy games like UT3 in a store and put them on your Steam account as if you had bought them there.

I imagine Valve would be the least resistant to something like this.

There's still a ton of people playing it. It isn't subscription based, so when people quit it's often for a few months and not permanent. If you're worried about the game being a ghost town, it's still way better off than most MMOs outside WoW.

I'm not sure how populated early PvE areas still are, though. Keep in mind that you can and often will want to do a lot of the PvE stuff with henchmen/heroes (NPCs), so how big an issue that is is debatable.

If you can get the trilogy + expansion cheap, go for it.
