It would seem to me that some people no longer play for enjoyment

Title says it all. Often have i wondered where the fun is in standbying people in gears 2, or boosting 50s in halo 3, being racist, talking a load of abusive shit to your own team, or quitting constantly to get negatve exp in halo 3, or creating a whole new gamertag just because your kill-death ratio isn't as good as you'd like it to be. Amongst other things. Anyway you get the point.

So i've oftened wondered why people do things like that, and it seems to me that it is ego-driven - these people are out to convince themselves that they are "pro" and really really good at the game, and to do that they do things like believing their playstyle (coughMLGcough) is superior to all others, when in reality it's just another gametype. And they need that 50 no matter what so they can continue believing they are the best of the best. And of course when you beat them at the game, you shake them out of their dream world, and they desperately try to crawl back in by passing you off as a "noob", despite the fact you beat them, and how you were lagging (despite having host), and above all how "you fucking suck all you can do is *INSERT PEFECTLY LEGITIMATE STRATEGY HERE* you fucking *INSERT GENERIC INSULT HERE*

And that is why i believe people always say that games with less competitive atmospheres (forza, graw) where people are just out to HAVE SOME FUN have better communities, although really it's usually just a case of being able to avoid those people.

PART 2: Ranking systems and how they are evil :

Let me just start off by saying...

There is one massive misconception around ranking systems. Both on the developers and players part:

A ranking system is supposed to be there to get you as games that are as closely matched as possible. But somewhere along the way, it changed so that the purpose of the ranking system is to have a "reason" to continue playing - Haven't you noticed that exp-based and unlockables "ranking" systems are becoming increasedly popular? Just look at team fortess 2 unlockables, killzone 2, resistance 2, hell even gears 2 got changed to an exp based one. It's the cool thing to do, the developer has something to keep people playing their game and the player has something to keep on playing for.

And just generally fans the flames of the i play for e-penis attitude massively. Thus ultimately destroying almost all friendliness and "we're just here to have a fun game". This turns a game into a big steaming pile of unpleasantness and anger with gamers who would otherwise be perfectly friendly but instead are shouting SHUT UP FAGGOT and the likes.

People moan and bitch about the halo 3 ranking system all the time on the bungie forums, but that is just because people are looking at the trueskill system from a completely wrong point of view.

Just as ranking systems like the cod4 one do not exist to determine a player's skill at the game, the point of the trueskill system is not to rank up, but to find the skill level which you are "even" at - Not winning loads and neither losing loads. Granted it is far from perfected (example squad battle isn't "aligned" properly onto the 1-50 scale. 30 is generally equivalent to a lone wolves 45) but IT WORKS completely fine, so long as you use it as it is supposed to be used.

Surely you must have noticed there is no nastiness at all on GRAW, and coincidentally no ranking system? (if there is then doh...)

if everybody could just Stop caring about rank, then the online gaming world would be a better place

Thank you again and again, feel free to deposit thoughts.
