I don't know what to do with my hair.(advise on self cutting)

My hair has gotten pretty long and I have no attachment to that, I just hate getting my hair cut. I have been thinking of buying some clippers and just cutting it myself. Do any of you guys cut your own hair? I just want to be able to have my hair not make me look like a bum without having to go to a damn hair cutting store thing, I don't even know what to call them... If I get a set of clippers can I cut my own hair and have it look like I actually give a damn with out me having to actually give a damn?

I'm at the point where full on pony tail is a consideration in my hairdo. I don't even enjoy having long hair though I usually do. I need help! Do I continue down this long hair road or do I cut it myself? and how do I get acquainted with self hair cutting? I just hate salons and barbershop though I cant tell them apart.... they are all asian ladies who barely speak English, I just want respectable hair with limited fuss.

here is me with short hair:

and now with long ass hair(most recent photo):

@devil240z: If your hair was shorter, I'd say you might be able to do it yourself, but with that length, you're likely just to either get it uneven or shorter than you wanted. I've had hair that length for many years, and I would recommend doing yourself a favor and getting a professional to take care of it. Just get a normal haircut from someone who knows what they're doing.

I know from past posts that I live in the same city as you, and I used to get my haircut by one of those Asian ladies you mentioned. Every time I went she would say "you have good head for flattop" which was kind of a bummer. I used to have longish hair but I've been living dat short hair life for a couple years now and it feels great. (never went with the flattop)

So yeah, my advice to you is yolo.

DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR! (you'll lose your power)

Just learn to turn a pony-tail into a bun. Also, you have the genes for an awesome elizabethan beard, and the over-all look is is sexy.

It works for me anyway.

Edit: I should mention that I get my hair cut once every 3 years or so, and donate it to Locks for Love. Maybe you could consider doing that...for what its worth.

I've been cutting my own hair with clippers for a few years now. I don't really have a hairstyle, so when it gets to be around an inch and a half long I do the following:

  • Shampoo and pat dry.
  • Part my hair at the line between the side and the top of my head, essentially making a combover.
  • 1/4" guard, from the bottom upward to the parting line, always moving against the growing grain.
  • Switch sides, again parting at a line even with the other.
    • You'll likely have to make many, many passes. Each successive pass is guaranteed to hit at least a little hair the others missed.
  • Use touch, and a mirror occasionally, to guide the clippers from the nape of my neck to the spot that feels aligned with the side parts.
  • 7/8" guard, from side to side and front to back across the entire top.
  • Take a pair of scissors to the hair around the ears, clipping it around and clear.
  • With a handheld mirror and a wall mirror, take the unguarded clippers to my back-of-neck hairline.
    • It's much easier if you've something to brace the handheld mirror against.
    • The hair on my neck all grows to one side, so I invested in some hair glue and comb it tightly downward before cutting it.

Invest in quality clippers and take your time, and you'll do just fine in only two or three tries. Even my first try wasn't noticeably poor.

A note, if you're going to use clippers, an inch is the longest in any kit I've seen. I wouldn't want to try scissors, though.

Do what I did. Remove it all!
But seriously, only do it yourself if you don't mind actually removing all of it. Because if you fuck it up you will most likely have to remove most of it to make it look decent. My two cents anyway.

The only reasonable cut you can do yourself is to trim it short with a machine. Anything else, and you should leave a professional do it.

In other words, you should definitely leave it to a professional.

I cut my own hair myself with clippers and no attachments.
I look like this....ignore Matt Damons face for I do not look like that, just the head. This is your only choice.

It does not help that if I let it grow out Id look like trevor from GTA 5.

Grow it, shave it, or get it professionally cut. Those are your only choices.

I saw 'self-cutting' and thought of something very different. I'm glad you aren't doing that.

I use a Wahl hair trimmer. Just put on the largest guard thing and trim everything to an even length, then put on a shorter one and trim the sides down a bit more. Take the guard off or use the detail trimmer thing to clean up the edges.

Super easy. Easier if you have two mirrors you can stand between to see the back of your head better.

Jeez, thank god I started playing GTA V last week because I would've gotten blind-sided with something I didn't want to discover until I played the game myself.

What you need to do is to spend all your money on food, spend time in the gym, then slick your hair back.

You will then look like Tom Hardy.

This is basically what I do. Entry-level Wahl clippers start at like 25 bucks, so they're super cheap, and mine's been working fine for well over a year now. It's pretty tough to do the back of your head, but you can always get someone you trust to do it for you, if you like. I've saved probably hundreds of bucks over the last 18 months or so on haircuts (but then I usually paid for a fancypants stylist over the barber cut).

Dude I have long hair but when I did it myself (cut it) I would use a shaving machine with one of the tips .... 100% same lenght all rounĀ“no penny spent on fancy hair saloons. Also helps with the beard trimin.

The only problem with cutting your hair yourself is that the uniform length means there's a point after a couple of week's where you look like a low-level polish criminal. Other than that I'd thoroughly recommend it. It's easy and cheap!
