FMV Games - Owned Guilty Pleasures

FMV games are dead, no question. The genre of full motion video adventure games died midway through the nineties partially due to the advance of 3D technology, and burnout of the audience on poor acting and even poorer production values.
Not all were terrible though, well, yeah, in hindsight they were all kinda bad, but I still have a few guilty pleasures I have from those days. Plus a few that stick out for one reason or another.
That said, most of these games have aged terribly, and you can never quite go home again.
List is in progress and currently in no particular order. Changes to be made as I go.

List items

  • When the GK series transitioned from pixels to FMV, the game lost a lot of it's charm in losing Tim Curry. However the story in Beast Within far surpasses that of its predecessor. Dean Erickson as Gabriel isn't so hot, but the supporting cast isn't too horrible.

Besides, any game that includes a German sung Wagner-esque opera as a key part of it's denouement was guaranteed to be a classic.

Only 4 discs for this one, if I remember correctly.

  • This game had some really interesting ideas at the time, and managed to pull in some decent stunt casting.

  • Some decent gameplay, but some obscure puzzle solutions here and there. I still can't believe that this game was my entry into the Zork games.

Acting varies, from a cast of Soap stars and "Hey, it's that guy!" z-listers.

  • Gah, some truly terrible game play, but it's always fun to watch Christopher Walken chew scenery. Plus - Karen Allen!

  • More stunt casting ahoy! However Dennis Hopper is in full phoning-it-in-for-a-pay-check-mode.

Another game from Take 2, back before they tried to position themselves as Activision Jr.

It's funny to think that now R*/Team Bondi have given Take 2 another post-war Black Dahlia themed mystery-solving themed game. Even if it is only for the Homicide portion of the case.

Who's in for Team Bondi getting ahold of the Ripper license so we can see their face capture on a digital Christopher Walken?

  • This game seemed like it was everywhere once upon a time.

Sure, The dialogue was corny as hell, the plot was full of more holes than Swiss cheese and the game play nothing to right home about.

But you know what? None of it mattered. The spoof/send up of the hard boiled PI, set in the near-future worked. While actually the 3rd game in the series, this is where the fun really started to kick in.

Followed by one decent sequel, and one sequel that was more notable for the flashing LED that came on every box cover, rather than the contents of the game within. If you still have fond memories of the character or series, check out http://www.unofficialtexmurphy.com/casefiles/radio/index.php for an audio drama produced with some of the original cast members.

  • KANE!

  • Pros : most of the show's cast (Scully, Mulder, Skinner, The Smoking Man, Lone Gunmen etc...) make appearances throughout the game.

Cons : most of the shows cast only make appearances throughout the game. You play as a rookie FBI agent through visually uninspiring levels (It's a dark warehouse! Now's it's a Ship! Now's it's more blurry photographs of rusty pipes!) I don't think I ever finished this one.

  • It's a live action Chrisopher Lloyd vs the voice of Tim Curry. Featuring the voice of Homer Simpson as your sidekick as well as S&M Care Bears. What's not to love! Fun for the whole family.

  • Didn't know which of the two games to put up here. The first game does atmosphere really well -- and hey, boobs!

I don't think I've laughed harder playing a bad game then Phantasmagoria 2. At the time I thought the basic premise and core story was intriguing, the execution of the game is kind of a mess. I believe there's a "Let's Play" up on TSE (http://spoonyexperiment.com/)

  • While I'll plead Guilty to playing this, it definately wasn't a pleasure.

  • Loved the `In Memoriam' series, even though they were really just single player ARGs (Evidence especially so.) A nice evolution of Majestic for those of us who don't want phone calls in the middle of the night.

  • See Above

  • Loved it! Although too many web sites would circumvent the in game web browser's search engine with spoilers to the clues.

  • Imagine the Aerosmith game Revolution X. Got it? Now take out Aerosmith. This game is really that bad.

Plus side -- sex scene! Minus -- The acting is more wooden than Pinocchio.
