Fakey's 2023 Games of the Year

Note: As always, I include my favorite games I played this year, even if they were released before 2022.

Unfortunately, 2023 was another hard year for me. Work was insane, for the second year in a row...

While I did get some decent gaming time in, I realized that I focused most of my time on long games, instead of playing a lot of smaller games.

And now that I realize that, I wish I would have played more smaller games. I have so many on my list, but the silver lining is that I really did get invested in so many bigger games, almost completely catching up on the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series (I still have to play 7), and I played both Last of Us games, back-to-back.

So, yeah, you're going to see those series monopolize my list...

Biggest Disappointments

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I never played Breath of the Wild, when it came out, because, at first, I didn't have a Switch. I was actually holding out for a "Switch Pro," when those rumors first started... I did start Breath of the Wild this year, but I have mostly found it rather boring. However, I do plan on getting back to it in 2024 so I can then move on to Tears of the Kingdom...at some point...

Starfield

I know I'm not alone in being disappointed by Starfield. I do plan on going back to it. I played 10-20 hours, and while I like parts of it, I, of course, fell off and went on to other things.

Games I wish I played/finished in 2023

Baldur's Gate 3

I decided that, before I play BG3, I wanted to go back and play Baldur's Gate I (Enhanced Edition) and II (for the first time ever). I still haven't gotten to 2, but I really enjoyed playing 1, again, and I'm so glad I made the choice. I have already ordered the new "collector's edition" from Larian that will be shipped early next year.

Cyberpunk 2077

I put 8-10 hours into Cyberpunk 2077 when it first launched, starting it on day one. However, I found it disappointing and put it down to wait for updates. I jumped in with the big patch this fall. I did end up putting it down again, but I'm going to go right back to it after I finish the game I'm working on right now.

God of War Ragnarok

I had God of War Ragnarok in this exact same place last year. I wanted to finish it, but I didn't, and I just couldn't get back to it this year. I still really want to finish it, so it is in my top 5 to play, right now, after a couple others...

Remnant II

I started Remnant II with a friend, playing co-op. The first "world" we got was so frustrating, I really dislike the game, despite it being nice to look at and the combat being pretty fun. I also can't believe that the second player in co-op still misses so much of the story and dialogue... However, I do want to finish it with my friend in early 2024.

Marvel's Spider-man

I still haven't played either of the new Spider-man games. I decided I wanted to play through Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy first, just to get those superhero games out of the way, but I just didn't have time to do anything but beat Avengers this year, with all the other games I played.

And My favorite Games of the Year I played in 2023!!:

List items

  • What can I say, this game was an experience. It is so powerful, engaging, and fun in so many places...and even when it is not "fun," it is beautifully brutal. I will give some of the new mode a try with the remaster coming in January.

  • I played Baldur's Gate once when it came out in 1998, and it has been one of my favorite gaming experiences since, even though I never played it again until this year. I'm happy to say that, 25 years later, it is still one of my favorite games. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. I'm going through the Siege of Dragonspear expansion now and then will play Baldur's Gate II before finally moving on to 3. I know that 3 doesn't continue the story, but I'm so glad I am playing through the first 2 before going to 3.

  • I played The Last of Us on PS3, and I thought I remembered more than I actually did... I really enjoyed playing it again...and going straight into 2 afterwards. I personally am happy they did the remaster/remake, as it looks so much better than the original, especially on PS5.

  • I worked hard this year to basically catch up on the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series. I still have to play 7, but I was happy that Gaiden can be played before playing 7, as it was exciting to play through a brand new game in the series, for the first time since 0 came out (which is where I started with the series, shortly after that game came out). I don't think Gaiden is one of the best in the series, overall, but it is very good, and it is very well made, and I really like the combat. I'm ready to start 7 very soon, and I plan on beating 7 and 8 (Infinite Wealth) in 2024!

  • I was not a huge fan of Yakuza 5, but 6 brought it back, for me. I still don't like the choice they took with Haruka and her pregnacy, but I still did like the game, overall, especially Onomichi, which was beautiful and really reminded me of Shenmue (which I plan to replay in 2024, as well).

  • I was so surprised to like Dead Souls as much as I did! I decided I'd try it out for my main "Halloween" game, but I actually really got into it, and I realized they put a lot more effort into it, the characters, animations, environments, and even the story than I ever thought they would in such a spin-off. And despite no other game in the series having gunplay like Dead Souls, this game really does gunplay as well as I could expect or hope.

  • I'll be honest, I was one of the people practically praying for Sega to bring Ishin to the US, and while I'm still VERY grateful that they did, and I did end up really liking the game... I was a tiny bit disappointed with how sparse it felt in the environments and textures, and I fell off of the game for a bit, partway through the year. However, I'm glad I went back, because I did end up enjoying the ending.

  • Haven Park is one of only a few smaller games I played this year. I do think trying to 100% it really takes away from the game, as it takes what is mostly a relaxing, warm game and makes it frustrating. However, once I realized I should not scour the island for the collectables, I reflected on a great, little comfort piece that reminded me of my own grandmother, of course...

  • Pyre was not as great as I was expecting, if I'm honest, but I still really loved the world, characters, and some of the choice given in the game. I wish the actual game within the game was more fun and didn't have as much seemingly cheap AI. However, overall, I did enjoy the experience. Now, I just have to finally play Hades...

  • Yakuza 5 is one of the lows in the series, for me. Like some other people, I didn't enjoy the Shinada segment, as I don't really like the character and didn't really like the baseball stuff or story. I also found Kiryu's position at the start of the game to be pretty uninteresting, and the driving was very frustrating. However, after I put the game down for a while, came back to it, and made myself finish it, I did enjoy the ending.
