What is the problem with Destiny?

Come with me on a journey, and cast your minds back to a time before PS4/Xbox One were officially announced, a now Halo-free Bungie invites a collection of press and associated game news sites to their offices where they prepare to announce their new IP to the world - Destiny.

Here was a title that, if delivered on its promise, was to be to gaming what Star Wars was to film.

What followed was a flurry of buzz and excitement about what this game could be, what it would offer, and how it could set a benchmark for the as yet unannounced next generation of gaming platforms.

There was a distinctly strange situation where Bungie were implying the title would appear on all consoles, but could only really confirm its presence on Xbox360, PS3 and PC. Clearly, the scale and scope of Destiny was one that would push the 360 and PS3 beyond its limits, and with Sony's next generation announcement right around the corner in Feb '13, and Microsoft due to follow suit shortly after, Destiny was rightly firmly in the spotlight for being able to take advantage from the power of the next gen.

Comments made from the Bungie team at the time were born from genuine excitement. This was a game they had wanted to make for some time, and since being released of Halo duties, were allowed to run free with their own destiny (if you pardon the expression) on their new IP.

What followed was quite simply, not a lot.

As time passed, and the new generation of consoles launched, other "hot" titles started to feel the heat - I'm looking at you, Watch_Dogs. More and more onlookers began coming to the conclusion that this promised land of truly game-changing, awe-inspiring titles was but a false profit prophet, and that actually these outstanding looking beasts were merely glammed up tech-demos. A lot has been made about Watch-Dogs being "not fun" during its play-test phases. So much thought and consideration was put into making this technical marvel, this truly interconnected city, filled with an exploitable population, that the "game" element was almost forgotten about. The inclusion of disconnected mini-games, and a bit of a refresh in the mission structure appears to have at least attempted to address those fears.

We will find out soon enough, I guess!

Other titles like DriveClub, which was due to be a launch title in Nov '13 for PS4, slipped and slipped, before being pushed all the way back to Oct '14.

So lets come back around to Destiny.

A lot of people have gone cold on Destiny. Partly because there hasn't been very much since the official announcement to explain how these grand ideas are all going to come together. There was a short playable demo of a specific underground area that some who are lucky enough were privileged to experience. And by all account, it was a very acceptable shooter, as you would expect from the team that brought you one of the generation defining shooters in Halo. But a lot of questions were left unanswered at this event, which left onlookers worried about the state of the promised "persistent online" features. Having seen dreadful situations unfold with the launches of online only games such as the PC versions of Diablo3 and SimCity, gamers probably rightly hold a bit of reservation about whether or not this game will fulfil its potential, without the nightmare of those games.

The reality is, Destiny will probably fall somewhere between Phantasy Star Online for the matchmaking (lobby) mechanics, Borderlands for the weapon crafting and Diablo3 for the multiplayer looting mechanics. All meshed together with FPS qualities of Halo (like it or hate it, Halo is an important game in the history of FPS) and more than a shred of inspiration from Star Wars.

With all that in mind, for me, it only takes another cursory glance over the concept artwork and the work in progress screens for me to forget about all of those concerns and get excited again. This could be the best Star Wars game that isn't Star Wars.

For this casual gamer, September 2014 cannot come quickly enough.

I really don't get your Star Wars comparisons, but I am also quite excited for Destiny. It sounds like it combines two things I like--Halo combat with an expanded Borderlands-esque quest structure and co-op system--to make a fun, loot-based first-person shooter. If there's enough content and the story stuff is interesting (I'm sure the gameplay will be fine, given the company's track record), I think it'll be very much to my liking.

This game still looks like my goddamn jam. It's definitely one of the games I'm anticipating most this year. I love Bungie's FPS gameplay and have always loved their games in co-op, so Destiny's structure totally excites me. I'm really looking forward to playing the game with my Borderlands co-op buddies.

I think it's a hard sell for some people simply because we can all see exactly what kind of game it is, and everyone is going to have a pretty good idea already whether they're going to enjoy it or not.

I don't think there's an issue with Destiny as much as we seem to be in a Destiny PR slump. I would say I was the most excited about Destiny at last years E3 when they showed off that brief gameplay part. But as with a lot of video games, if you don't follow a specific game on your own, the PR machine comes and goes (just look at Rockstar). I'm sure by E3 and beyond the'll start up the campaign for Destiny again and it'll be on people's radar much more.

Since I was never a big fan of the Halo franchise I never dived into coverage of Destiny until they had something substantial to show off. So I have probably missed some of their "grand vision" ideas and have taken what I have seen of Destiny at face value. Which is to say I see a Borderlands styled shooter with a different coat of paint and general philosophy. Which sounds right up my alley.

Don't think most people ever though of it as some kind of Star Wars of gaming. Even when it was unveiled initially, people were positive sure and it was welcomed, but almost no one was dropping their pants and jizzing all over it, at least not on this site.

I am a huge Halo fan but i did not enjoy Halo 4 much. I was very happy about Bungie leaving MS after Reach (loved Reach!), going multiplat. Promising stuff. Then the new consoles got released. I bought a PS4 at launch and traded it in shortly after that. Such a disappointing system. It was the first time that i couldn´t get excited about new gaming hardware. The Xbox One was and still is completely out of question for me personally because of how it was marketed, because of Live, MS´s take on the console business and many more reasons. To sum it up, I have a WiiU, a PC and a 3DS these days and i am very happy with these machines. Zero urge/plans to buy into any other gaming devices anytime soon.

I am still pumped about Destiny. I have no doubts that Bungie will deliever a very good game. I would buy it. It looks like a lot of fun but i will not buy into the next gen MS and Sony machines just to play this game. No Destiny PC or WiiU, no Destiny for me :P

I certainly am excited for Destiny. I am pretty sure it's going to be great, and given its grand plans for the future, it will become even greater still. I think it will merge the best of FPS gameplay with the positive reinforcement of RPG systems and the social glue of MMOs.

I think PvE and PvP will interlock in that special way that hasn't happend since vanilla WoW. Play some PvE, grab some great loot, shoot some dudes in PvP, get some more shiny loot, and so forth and so forth - and opposed to MMORPGs, FPS games with their low TTK (time to kill) do have a much easier time to maintain an enjoyable balance for everyone, despite *item level* disparity between players. No need to break-in-half the cohesion of the game's itemization with a silly PvP attribute like resilience.

Yep. I predict Destiny will have exquisite hooks, and I can't wait for them to dig into me. I love to be hooked on the good shit.

To me, Destiny simply looks like Halo and Borderlands smashed together with a colourful, kind of odd art style. That sounds exactly like my cup of tea.

I've heard a lot of people talk about the lack of info out there about destiny but I don't remember Bungie ever throwing 100s of trailers at us.

I'm excited for Destiny but the lack of PC version is really disappointing as I don't see myself getting a PS4 or XB1 any time soon as they both feel lacking on the software side and I spent just over 1K on a new PC back in Feb.

The PR for this game has been painfully hype driven while also being super restrained. They're marketing this thing as the next big while also failing to show you a reason why it will be. Nothing that they've shown has been jaw dropping or game changing. Cool, you go into dungeons, get loot, fight bosses ant team up with friends. That's great but none of that looks, or sounds, unlike stuff we've seen before. It could just be a case of a game that plays much better than it can ever be shown. The upcoming beta is a chance to get me excited again.

So I think that the initial hype for this game was strong because bungie was so vague about what the game was. You got the sense that this was some crazy next gen paradigm shift and that it would be a true next gen title. The initial art promised a bold new world to explore and get lost in. But now the new consoles are out and bungie has been very cagey about what the game actually is. Nothing that they have shown looks that revelatory in any way really. It seems to be a co-op game in the style of borderlands or fuze but with combat very reminiscent of halo. That actually sounds like a great mix to me but nothing about that is particularly groundbreaking. I haven't seen anything about the game that couldn't have been done on last gen consoles. Of course the graphics are better than previous bungie games but not by a huge margin. Its a good looking game with a snappy art style but its not technically at the level of say crysis 3 maxed out on a proper PC. I still have no idea if this game will have a narrative focus of note or not and if the game has true exploration. They have kind of crapped out with the PR for this game. Its cool to have a mysterious first reveal to get people excited but the games not far off anymore and no-one seems to have a clue what this game actually is or isn't. I'm hoping that things will be clarified after E3.

Also, I am very disappointed that there is allegedly no PC version in the works. These exclusivity deals are the absolute bane of this industry and total bullshit. Not everyone can afford to have every platform and there is no reason the game should not come out on the PC. Its almost like they don't want money. People are still playing halo:CE all these years later.

I think some of the blame rests with the stereotypical, forum going video game player and how jaded they have become. When a game is fist announced and details are scarce, they fill their heads with visions of some grand gift from the gods that totally changes the way video games are played and also cures cancer.

Then more details are released, and forum guy starts to break it down into its parts and the honeymoon is over. He realizes that it's just a video game. It's no longer a brand new universe to explore with friends, it's Halo meets Borderlands. Once you realize that every game is going to be made up of core systems that you've probably seen in other games, it becomes harder to fall victim to both hype and the subsequent let down.

I realize this, so I'm still excited for Destiny. I don't care that there isn't a constant stream of hype over the course of a year leading up to the game. I wouldn't pay attention to it anyway. When I know I'm going to get a game, I go dark on most media so that it's still fresh when I get my hands on it.

Watch out for the homophones - It's not false profit, it's false prophet. ....god I hate my pedantic self.

Otherwise good blog. I think it is certainly true that many of the new horizons we were promised are not quite as shiny and wonderful as expected. I think that is to be expected though and it won't be until next year that we see the fruits of this next generation.

My thoughts on Destiny are that it looks pretty and will probably play very well but I have to say I am disappointed that Bungie have shown so little imagination. That it is another first person space shooter seems slightly boring in my opinion. Hopefully they can do something really interesting with the online to make it worthwhile.

The naysayers just need to wait for E3. That is when they will really turn up the clock on this game being showcased and getting "reveals". Like I said elsewhere, my preorder is already in.

I'm not a hater, it looks like a solid game but it doesn't interest me. As a huge Halo fan I appreciate a firefight that's more than 'ain for the head, move on to next target' which is how most shooters treat gunfights. They're straightforward. I generally liked Borderlands but not enough to actually make it to the end of the 2nd one.

In my mind, from footage I've seen, Destiny plays just like Borderlands. A co-op, loot oriented shooter where all you do is aim for the head. I sensed no tactics or variety in approach which kinda bummed me out. The simple playability of Destiny doesn't interest me.

Basically this. And that it's another space shooter that's even more similar to how everyone else makes shooters.

I would have liked to see a few more mechanics added to the Halo formula than I've seen in the trailers so far.

Your memory must be a little hazy. IIRC, the hype extended to "Bungie made Halo. Now they're making this. Fingers crossed". Bungie make excellent games but most of the hype around that time was how the next gen was going to change gaming across the board, and some people are still waiting for something other than Twitch integration and persistent online worlds.

Also, I'm not that hot on Star Wars. I'm not of that generation and all I knew as a kid was Darth Vader was Luke's father. Then, I probably saw the prequels first. I also don't get what it did for movies that isn't similar to what Avatar "did for movies".

Anyway, Destiny was only ever going to be an FPS, no matter what the feature set. Gaming is diversify and people are more vocally wanting other things. It's still going to do well.

I feel like they revealed that game way too fucking early and assumed everyone would get mad hyped because they can say "From the makers of Halo", but a lot of the people who like Halo are rubes who don't know or care that Bungie isn't making Halo anymore and they're still content to play Halo 4 and beyond, mediocre thing that it may be. So that's an issue they're facing.

I'm still excited for it, because maybe Destiny will be like Borderlands but missions and enemies that aren't totally lame, and with more than one fucking active ability (seriously, Borderlands 2, how are your skill trees still full of nothing but boring passives?).

I expect a huge ramp up in PR around E3, to get people excited about the beta in July. I think this summer will be all about Destiny. I just got my beta code for preordering. I'll decide whether or not to keep the preorder after I play the beta. I'm cautiously optimistic about the game. Some people are definitely over-hyping it for themselves, but that happens with every game. I see nothing that leads me to believe this will be bad (or incredible). Looks like a lot of fun though.

I will be playing this game day 1. It's a bummer that the PC port is probably a while out, if it even happens. Will probably suffer through the PS3 version unfortunately. :-(

Yeah, those guys are probably neck deep in E3 demo preparations already. I'm not too surprised they'd go dark for a while, if only to make a bigger splash in the next hype cycle.

@scrawnto: That doesn't really make me automatically think of a speeder bike. There's enough difference there to distinguish the two. At this point, there is so much science fiction design and aesthetic out there that everything is going to look like something else.

@wemibelec90: Sure. To be clear, my post shouldn't be considered a criticism in any way. I think the Shrike looks rad, and it's certainly a different aesthetic. I just see how the hoverbike-with-two-pronged-front design would look like an homage to the bike in Star Wars.
