I can't give specifics as to what I think they should/need to do, cause I have no idea how to run a successful website, let alone how to cultivate a community, but I can articulate what I want from Giant Bomb, as that's always been pretty simple: A core team of editors and producers that have great chemistry and are engaging and entertaining on camera. What doesn't do it for me is a constantly rotating roster of contractors putting out video essays or podcasts. I don't know these people (besides some of the gamespot folks, but if I wanted gamespot, I'd visit gamespot) nor do I really care what they think of a Weezer album, or the Super Mario Bros. movie.
It's not even an issue of not having enough gaming related content, I'm well served by the entire internet in that regard. I've never had an issue in the past with GB going off on long ass non-gaming related tangents, because I liked the staff, and wanted to hear them talk about their passions and follow their interests. Also it usually made for some really funny anecdotes.
The GB of yore is long gone, no question. Nothing lasts forever, and GB had a great run up until now, and while I'm not at all satisfied with the site outside of the Bombcast, which I think is the best its been in a couple years, I think the site is going through some painful changes and look at the current output more as a stopgap until they have a clearer vision for the site in place.
