A Little Bit Of: Endless Space

Space is big.

Also I hadn't intended this to compete against the actual Quick Look that went up today. Damn you Bradley! But ah well. This is a 4X strategy game that is rather awesome. It doesn't have any single player campaign mode but that's sort of to be expected from 4X games, but there are some really cool races and lore which I would've liked to see fleshed out. I love the UI in this game. It's lovely, it's not super fancy of anything but it looks good and is so wonderfully functional. Pretty much any information you need about your empire is only a short few steps away and you get really good overviews of your planetary systems and fleets.

This game can be pretty hard but it's pretty flakey at times with it's generation in that it seems to be a bit too random. I've started many a game where my empire has floundered in the middle of the game just because the systems surrounding my homeworld were just awful and filled with wonderfully habitable places like asteroids and lava planets. But luckily on this map I got a bit lucky so I got a good starting position.

This is a rad complicated game that is just kind of great to play. The AI can be pretty brutal even on the supposed easier difficulty settings but it's easy enough to let you get a hang of things. I haven't played it against real people yet but I'm hoping to get to it at some point. It really has the one more turn vibe that so many of these types games do and I want to play more of it when I get the chance.

Super pleased with everything I've seen so far. I like that they're also pretty transparent about the fact that it's still "in progress" and letting players vote on new features, etc. I'm really hoping the develop some more of the lore into actual game mechanics. Horatio has quickly become one of my favourite factions, just based on explanation alone. I'm also amazed that this game looks as good as it does and runs as well as it does, even on my 5-year-old laptop.

"I'm going to clone myself and fill the stars with myself" is a pretty great backstory for a science fiction faction.

When I read that I had to just think for a moment, they can't have been the first ones to come up with that idea right? Some of the backstory is real awesome. I'm eager for what they do in the future with the game.

I am kicking myself after not buying this while it was on sale after I read about the factions. Namely the amoebas. I want to read an entire book now about a race of cosmopolitan single celled organisms.

@thabigred: And what book might that be? Currently playing as the Amoebas in this game and that sounds awesome.

Very nicely done! I'll be sure to check out more of your 'a little bit of' format. As for the game, I'll have to ckeck it out for myself sooner than later but I'm neck-deep into other games as well. I always slightly struggled with Space 4X games and the added level of abstraction I'll have to say. I'm just a sucker for the silly real-life reference a Civ game throws at me every once in a while.

@gaminghooligan: The hero system is cool, but the way I play I'm limited to 3 heros right up till the very end so I have a giant empire with very few heros. But I've found that a good commander or pilot can really turn the tide of a war that you're losing when paired with a single good fleet.

@Baal_Sagoth: I think time is one of the big reasons they're hard to get into, they take a while to learn and a single game can last hours or days minimum. But as for games that you just play for a giant length of time 4Xs have you covered!
