My quest to slay the Electronic three

well well well guess who got to goto E3 for free... yes indeed it was me. Anyway that's not the point I'm just braggin a bit.
For this here blogpost I thought I might just give my own take on what I experienced at the expo. Between racing to grab swag, get pics, and get looks, here's what I got to get my hands on:
1) Medal of Honor
2) Castlevania
3)Legend of zelda
4)Metroid other M
5) Marvel Vs. Capcom 3
6) Sonic 4

Now for a quick lil breakdown on my hands on time.

Medal of Honor: This game was fun with no blaring errors and pretty much what I expected of the game going in. I really only have two issues with the game. I find the ps3/2 control scheme unenjoyable for my shooters, plain and simple. The analog sticks just don't feel right and the right and left "triggers" aren't triggers. Simply the controlller doesn't feel right to me for those reasons.  The second issue is the game might as well be called Call of Honor: Medal for Warfare edition. It feels like it is just short of being an MW2 clone. Don't get me wrong it does have its own style but Cod beat you to the punch. Sidenote: I can't really fault them for that as hllchild informed me the call of duty people came for the MOH squad so turnabout is fair play etc...

Castlevania, Legend of Zelda, and Metroid were pretty much what I expected going in. Castlevania has got the action platformer god of war thang goin on and I think it does that well and in line with the Castlevnia aesthetic. Legend of Zelda looks and plays like Legend of Zelda, this time they are making the wiimote and wii functionality essential to the core gameplay, rather than the teritiary implementation use in twilight princess. This game will move units it's zelda and it's done perfectly for the wii. The new metroid was enjoyable overall... Personally I never thought metroid actually needed a real story. This one has story to spare. It was a good game and my only gripe... a big gripe. You can't move while in visor mode. If I owned a wii, I would hate having to constantly transition between pointing the wiimote at the screen and using it as a controller. I think the difficulty of bosses won't come from gameplay, but from this specific element of the control scheme.

My apologies for the rushed reviews ahead... though they do encapsulate the feel of those games, but I had to save some mental reserves for the last two. My favorite two games of the show for two distinct reasons.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Loved it because I loved MVC2 and over the past year played my pants off in that game and got decent at it. This new iteration of the versus franchise is a very fun and engaging game. It's fast-paced and competitive as always. I hated one thing about this game that I wasn't ready for... Apparently capcom is moving the versus franchise to the Tatsunoko control scheme (Light, medium, heavy, assit, switch, and dash). I played the pants off this game. Keep in mind I only played it on the arcade sticks, so I felt the controls other than the switch away from MVC2 were just fine. No comment on the ps3 controller and how it relates to the experience. The first time I ran this game I figured I could bring my mvc2 skills out, didn't even check the control scheme. Needless to say I got somewhat wrecked. From then on I checked the controls and threw down for some wins... The game looks solid I like it and can't wait to find a friend with a ps3 and arcade sticks to get my jam on.
There was also a competition to win a kickass shirt from Capcom... the line for that was too long and 5 wins in a row was required to get one... I didn't have time to wait and school five punks just to win a shirt lol.

Sonic 4 was what I have always been waiting for since I played the Sonic games on my genesis. This game is definitely what sega and the franchise have needed to go back to. They kept what was right about the adventure titles and went back to the sidescrolling approach to gameplay. It seems as though they slowed sonic down a bit, but it doesn't hamper gameplay in the slightest. They kept the double jumps and dash attack from the adventure titles. It doesn't screw up the gameplay in the slightest  it seemed to actually open up a lot of design space. As far as awesome reboots go I give the award to sonic... Also I love sega so I can't bare seeing whats been happening to them since the dreamcast. So Sonic 4 is my game for the show... This in combination with bayonetta and Vangaurd, a game I never heard of until E3, shows me Sega is makin their move back to the gaming limelight. I still weep for them late in the night for those years when the industry abused them.

Bing it?

With microsoft's bing.com taking off, I asked myself the question of whether or not it could really become true competition to the google machine. I forgot the name for this term, but there is indeed one for it. There is a term that describes when a company or a brand name becomes the iconic staple of an industry or market. For example, when I ask someone for tissue paper with which to blow my nose I don't actually ask for tissue paper. I ask for a kleenex. Kleenex had such a great mind and marketshare that there brand name became the product itself.  The first time I went to the store and realized kleenex was a brand name I was like damn how can anyone else make an impact when people think there product should say kleenex on the side. Google has done much of the same thing, I don't know when people first started doing it. I do remember some time back in the 90's when people said you could look it up on the internet and gave me a whole slew of search engines like lycos, askjeeves(ask.com) or yahoo. Nowadays whenever I or someone else asks for information the typical response is google it. Other than their crapton of money, how can microsoft combat such ridiculous market penetration in which google's name is attached to the very concept of using a search engine.
