Game of the Year 2018 User's Choice DRAFT

Fuck 2018.

No, for real. Fuck 2018. This year has been stressful and awful and damaging. There's been good for sure, but so much of it has been eclipsed by other shit it's hard to feel good about any of it right now. I had a month-long panic attack working at North Ryde, I had to get surgery to repair my god damn butt which left me in pain and just generally feeling like complete shit for months. Perhaps the only good thing that happened this year was someone I love getting SRS. But hey! I played a bunch of videogames so let's talk about them!

  • I fucking love Mechwarrior, particularly Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries. But just in general it's a world I really adore. Back in highschool I used to just spend entire periods browsing sarna.net

    I was bitterly disappointed by Mechwarrior Online a couple years ago, but this was such a nice surprise to see come out and be really really good.

    They've had to rebalance some stuff post release, but honestly none of that really bothered me. I got to yell out "I AM THE BLACK KNIGHT" and kick off the Black Knight 2000 music as I trudged down a hill and fired a bunch of PPCs.

    I haven't finished it because of life getting in the way, but it's been such a great time.

  • I think the only game on this list that came out this year that I played myself?

    I was a huge, huge fan of the last game, and I was given this one for Christmas this year, and it's just as impressive as the last time around.

  • I don't like survival games in the slightest. I didn't like playing Subnautica either! But what I did enjoy was streaming this game with the rest of the household early in the year. It was a nice, terrifying, low-stakes thing to do while we told the internet about our sex lives and made crude jokes about holes in trees.

    Subnautica brought us closer together and I really appreciate it for that.

  • Let me tell you a story. It's a story about masculini- No, wait! Come back! A story of *positive* masculinity. A story of extremely good boys, who try to make the world a better place, and who slam dudes' faces into urinals and kick their chin through the porcelain.

    Yakuza 0 is my first Yakuza game, and it likely won't be my last!

  • I've only played a little bit of this myself, but most of my exposure to it has been watching housemates play it. It's weird, but hanging out on the couch watching those two play this game off and on throughout the year has been an important part of my life, and I'll treasure it for a long time.

  • Guilty Gear is honestly sick, and slick, as hell. May being a cute poly lesbian with her pirate polycule is adorable, Slayer being a strict monogamist who fucks his wife to a timetable is hilarious, and Baiken is hot as hell.

    I can't pull off a lot of the moves in this game, especially the supers, but this has been a great game to return to over and over again at our house.

  • IndieDB is obviously not a videogame, but it does contain a lot of the very weird bullshit we've played together on Friday nights throughout the year, and I'd be remiss to not include it on my list.
