Upgraded to Windows 7 Retail...UGH

So I've been testing the beta for the 64-bit version of Windows 7 and I was really impressed. Most of my likes about were based on its Aero theme because I went from XP to 7.  The beta was good, a few features were missing that I needed but aside from that solid. Recently I upgraded to the full retail version on account of I'm a member of MSDN (microsoft developers network) and boy did they fuck it up somehow. I had to turn off numerous animations for aero to look acceptable (granted I dont have the best video card in my laptop but it worked just fine on beta). The also implemented a bunch of new security features which seems more annoying then the "Cancel or Allow" thing everyone always complains about vista. Now regular system folders are blocked off to even adminstrators and to unlock them you need to go through several tabs to issue permissions. God I miss XP, but I put 4 gigs of ram into my laptop so If I were to go back I would need the 64-bit version and I hear nothing but bad things about XP's 64 bit. Well this definetly sucks!

I think its good so far. I've only had it for about a week though. You can fix a few of your issues by adjusting some settings too.

I dont think any settings can fix my 16mb graphics card. I installed ATI's Catalyst Controll center which for some reason allocated like a gig of video ram to my card but its still mad slow (i have 4 gigs)

You had to disable all sorts of security crap on XP, and then had to do it again for the new SP2 features. It sounds like business as usual to me, and nothing to make a fuss over, unless you have to take those steps every time you want to access the folders or something crazy like that.

Sorry to hear about the graphical issues, but damn, you're lucky it's compatible with your hardware at all from the sounds of it...

I have had no issues with Vista so when and if I upgrade, I doubt I'd have issues with it.

So these new security features you're talking about aren't UAC related? Because I know that can be tweaked. I'm still on a release candidate, but I hope none of these issues affect me when I upgrade to RTM since I'm on a 4 year old laptop. My graphics card should be fine, though. I'm not sure what they could have done to make it perform worse.

I don't know about Windows 7, but the "Allow or Cancel" thing on Vista could not be any more true.

The first time I saw the allow and cancel thing in vista (right after upgrading from XP) I think I yelled something like this at my screen: "YES I WANT TO OPEN FIREFOX GET THE F""K OUT OF MY WAY YOU PIECE OF WORTHLESS TECHNOLOGY".

Luckily I found out how to turn that crap off later the same night.

The computer I'm working on now was purchased with Vista.  We also signed up for the free upgrade to Windows 7 when we bought it.  But I had to downgrade it to Windows XP to get my internet connection working properly.  Now I'm worried I'll have to do a complete re-install when Windows 7 comes in the mail.  This will mean I have to backup all my files on disk or thumb drives and that's a pain in the ass.  What might happen is that I sorta wait 'till the system starts acting slow and bogged down before wiping the drive and adding Windows 7.  I tell ya, installing, updating, or re-installing an operating sytem is a nail-biting experience.

They have a special offer for students with a .edu email account where you can upgrade from Vista to W7 for just $30(40 if you want a hard disc copy).  The problem is that they want you to upgrade to the same version of 7 that you have with Vista.  What the problem is that I have Vista Ultimate, which means it is apparently a bitch to upgrade using that offer.

I'll have to learn more about it to see what I can do.
