I don't think playing the first Portal is necessary to enjoy Portal 2, but it couldn't hurt, it's also not going to take long to get out of the way before jumping into its sequel.

Either way, definitely pick up Portal 2, it's an absolutely outstanding game that I think everyone should at least try their hand at.

You finish Portal while Portal 2 is downloading off Steam. Do it!

Don't play Portal 2 before Portal.  1 is a much smaller game in a lot of ways, but it has some dynamite moments (or nobody would have cared when P2 came out).  It's like when you see a movie and know it was originally a play (it has 3 actors and takes place in one room).  Portal is kind of like that.

I think, in general, if you didn't bother with an older game in a series, and you didn't see the draw and the sequel is getting a lot of press, you shouldn't get it just because it's new and shiny, it's still probably not for you.

However in this particular case you need to call in sick from work/school and get to it. Portal 1 then Portal 2, well worth your time and money.

Portal is amazingly cheap, but if you can't afford it I'm sure some kind soul will gift you it. There are always about a million spare copies going.

To answer your question, though, yes. Play it. Love it... Play it again... Youtube the ending a few more times.

You won't be disappointed, unless you hate having lots of fun. Then you will be disappointed.

I was in the same boat, and I told myself today "now I am going to sit down and do this Portal-thing".  Finished Portal only half an hour ago, great, great game.

Personally I can't see getting Portal 2 until the price drops a bit, even though I enjoyed the first.
