realfunfuneral: Best of 2009

  • Assassin's Creed II not only turns everything from the first game up to 11, but also makes the first one seem better and more plausible than it was originally. Better graphics, better integration of moves, better characters, better missions, better collectables, better story, better design, better layout, better achievements; there's nothing that isn't improved here. I battled through everything it had to offer, all the story to feel like the ultimate vengeful badass, all 1000G of achievements, and still wanted more. I actually can't wait for the next part and can easily see me playing through this one again, and lapping up any DLC they put out. Loved it.

  • Easily the freshest, most original, and interesting little game I played all year. An obscure approach to narrative and gamplay, with the creepiest atmosphere of any game in years. If you've ever read and loved Angela Carter stories then you'll appreciate what this does, and it's as close to playing one as you'll get. It's very love it or hate it though. It might come across as too dull or too pretentious for some. For me though it left a lasting impression, and I'll certainly be keeping an eye on these guys in the future.

  • Whilst everyone seems to be zombie obsessed these days, it's impressive that two zombie games stood out enough to be included on my list. Popcap have done what they do best putting out another crack-tasticly addictive little game which I sunk many a sleepless night into this year. Excellent style, simple, addictive gameplay, and hilarious little touches make this easily one of the funnest games of the year.

  • This could have gone horribly wrong but thankfully Telltales love of the originals has given us a thoroughly enjoyable genuine Monkey Island game. The first part starts of fairly gentle, playing it quite safe and could have gone either way but thankfully each subsequent part improved, expanding some whistful nods into outright laugh out loud moments. A good mixture of new and old and a worthy addition to the Monkey Island legacy. I'm glad adventure games made such a strong return this year.

  • I liked the idea of the first game but it felt a bit lacking for me. This one polished up that idea and made it into a much fuller and more enjoyable experience. A better range of modes, environments, zombies, challenges, and weapons, with the same trademark humour and exciting achievements to keep you coming back again and again.

  • It's on everyone's best of lists because its dark, brooding, faithful, and so well made. The only reason it isn't higher on mine is probably because I'm not that much into superheroes, and I haven't really thought much about it since I rattled through it in about a week.

  • A lot of people had a hard time with this one and complained about it being neither here nor there but I had no trouble adjusting to its balance of genres and its made with such love for its subject matter and is so fun to play that I found it hard to quit until the main story was all wrapped up, collectables and all.

  • This sucked me in and kept me going until 100% completion. Both old-school and modern with such a high level of polish and love. any new Xbox Live games have a high water mark to reach now.

  • The first of several PC games to get onto my list which I wouldn't have expected possible in this day and age. An old-school point and click that clearly loves its predecessors and can easily stand alongside the best Lucasarts classics with its dark humour, fun puzzles, and excellent presentation.

  • This made me pick up my DS for the first time in a long time. Not only does it integrate the touch screen stuff really well, and really push the graphics to a new level, but it also strikes a good balance between the story structures found in later GTA games, and the fun arcadeyness of the original.
