2020 Games and Visual Novels Completed
I am hoping to finish off a lot of the games I started but put on standstill. I would also like to clean up more of my Steam Library and other consoles. Hopefully I make some good progress. I also hope everyone else gets to complete their wishlist as well.
Galaxy Girls (Blossoms Bloom Brightest?):
A fairly decent and enjoyable Yuri visual novel that explore the connection of strangers on a space voyage.
Cons:
I usually play visual novels or games by doing the path of the characters I do not like that much first and then playing the ones I enjoy last. This kind of leaves a good impression on me and may cause some bias to my reviews, however I think it is more enjoyable this way. Yet, in order to fully explore the game you kind of have to do the events in order from the paths that the authors set out for you. This is not an issue for people not interested in achievements, however for people who want all the content and dont want to follow a set order, this may seem a bit odd for a choice. It was not a big issue for me, however I just kind of wish I could make my own order for these kinds of games.
The author could have explore more of each characters talents and abilities a little more. There are a few moments where two of the characters get their own scene for their special talent, but the others are kind of ignored and never really explained much. This could have led to some interesting ideas that could have given the reader some more to think about.
Pros:
The artwork is not terrible and enjoyable to look at. It is a little lacking, but this is also an older visual novel that does not use a lot of the current VN standards. I do enjoy the look and the chibis are also very cute. The music fits with the situation as well, but it a little lacking sometimes. I do think that they did their best with a limited budget or limited resources.
They have some enjoyable Yuri moments and do not go overboard. The scenes are tasteful and still add to the story and context. I usually worry about some of the content these Yuri VNs will provide, however, this one did a decent job at not over bearing the player with the fan service.
All in all, this is a decent Yuri VN that players may be willing to give a try and it does not push players to go too deep into sexual content. There will probably be some players who may not be interested in this, but it would not hurt to at least read the Kotoha path which provides the most information and seems to be the true path.
Null and Peta - Invasion of the Bug Queen -
A game about removing computer bugs that is a little buggy, or just awkward.
Cons:
This seems to be a game based off an anime. While this is not an issue, usually games based off movies or shows or video series are usually not very good. I have not seen the anime, but I think the team might be better at making film production than games. I can not say the game is completely terrible since there are some enjoyable moments and you can kind of break the game to improve your success. It just does not seem like it would be very enjoyable unless you were a fan or just someone who might be interested in this kind of game.
The text is hard to read since it was not properly aligned in the text boxes when translating. Now I do know that there is a way to download the proper text so that the text fits, but this is a sign of rushed work or even just laziness. It is not completely terrible and I was able to read most of the text, but there is quite a lot of "out of box" text that ruins the story and visual of the game.
The music seems to be a little out of place. Some of the music matches the location that you are in, but other areas have music that does not seem to work with the area. I feel like the music was decent for the first area to try and get players interested in the game and then the developers did not know what to use after that. Most of it just seems to be randomly picked for some reason and does not give the proper vibe of the area. However, I did kind of enjoy some of the songs and thought they were decently made.
The equipment options are not very good. It would have been nice to be able to equip all items at once instead of having to equip a different item for each situation. This would make sense for different items on each different body part, but when you have three sets of boots and each one does a different things, this would be easier to work with if the better versions also protected from what the past versions protected from. So instead of one protecting against spikes, it would protect against spikes and fire. Yet, this game makes the player change for each hazard encountered. Also an item that shows invisible enemies and you have to unequip it to advance and encounter invisible enemies is not very enjoyable.
Pros:
The artwork is fairly decent and sort of fits the anime style that the game is base off of. They even have special events that are connected to certain random object in the game, and these items have a unique art style to themselves. I actually missed a few because the unique events almost matched the anime artstyle. However, I did enjoy the look and thought it fit my usual cutesy, colorful, anime style I like.
The game is not awfully hard. It does have a few hard moment, but once you know what to do and which items and weapons to use, then you will have an easier time. I was pretty much destroying bosses in a matter of seconds with the main characters special ability. There are harder difficulties that may make things harder for players who want that, but I did not care much to explore those options myself.
This is a game adapted from an anime or connected to an anime, that does not seem to work as well as the developers had hoped. It is very lacking and have quite a few problems. I am sure Fans of the anime will enjoy the game and understand the story more, but this is not really something many other people will enjoy trying.
