GOTY 2011

List items

  • What can be said that already hasn't? Skyrim is the best Bethesda RPG ever made, leaps and bounds ahead of Oblivion and Fallout 3. You fight dragons: that should be enough.

  • I am the bat. At least that's what I kept telling myself while playing. Batman: Arkham City is everything I wanted in a sequel: a bigger world, more enemies, gadgets, and Nolan North. The combat is amazing, and the sheer depth of quality content in and of itself is amazing.

  • Uncharted 3 is like sitting on your couch with a warm blanket, hot cocoa, and watching reruns of Star Trek: TNG. The episodes are predictable, but the overall experience is enjoyable. I had a blast shooting through hordes of goons and platforming like it's nobody's business, and would happily do it all again.

  • Portal 2 is funny. That's pretty rare in games, and to top the original Portal is an accomplishment. I didn't care that Chell never spoke: it just gave more speaking time to GLaDOS, Wheatly, and Cave Johnson to prattle on about lemons and potatoes. And Space. SPAAAAAAACE!

  • If looks could kill, Dead Space 2 would be given a life sentence with no chance for parole. Okay, maybe that was too corny, but DS 2 isn't. Gory, creepy, and moody, it is a phenomenal game, and has the best use of quick-time events in a game ever.

  • The kid typed at the keyboard. He knew somehow he had to talk about Bastion's amazing music and narration, but didn't quite know how. All he knew was smashin' things. He fought so well, it was a game to him. He loved it, and wanted everyone else to know as well.

  • L.A. Noire is a big adventure game, and I love it for that. Each new clue was exciting (unless it was a stupid bottle), and using my wits to solve the cases, even when I failed, was good. I wasn't a huge fan of the twist, but it played to the strengths of the genre perfectly.

  • Is it a game? Apparently, since it's on this list. Minecraft is LEGO's for grownups, and my inner 10 year old set to work building and digging and mining and fighting and oh man this game is so good. I don't even care what anyone else says, it's fun.

  • A great rogue-like, this game is so hard. One run I was fighting Mom with the 9-lives upgrade: I have 9 lives (versus one), but I only have one heart. Even when it gives you a halfway decent powerup, it makes the game harder. Still, it's addicting in that Super Meat Boy fashion of improving your skill, and the music is so good I bought the soundtrack.

  • SPAZ is a top-down space shooter, similar to games like Privateer. You go on missions, build up a force of ships, and go out there and become a galactic pirate. It takes time to speed up, but the ship customization is very deep and complex, forcing you to make decisions like getting better armor vs. maneuverability, and deciding if rockets or lasers or cannons will be the most effective, forcing you to keep a diverse squad that can handle almost anything. It's a fun game, filled with tons of content (and Zombies!).
