Why I am a PC gamer.

I have every single console from the current generation and have taken turns playing each exclusively. But the one "console" I believe outranks all the others is the PC. Why the PC, without any unified game service and a high entry price and some pretty crappy DRM at points? Well the answer can be long but I'll try to keep it short. I'll go through my pros individually.

  • The price: something that is overhyped tremendously about PCs is the pricing. I am sitting at my computer right now that I spent about $300 on. Now I should note this does not include the price of a monitor but do you include the price of a TV when you buy a console? One of the best ways to save money on PCs is to buy a barebone kit, which is just all the components you need to make a computer but you put it together yourself, or just buy the parts individually. WARNING: You can damage parts putting your PC together yourself but I had a nerdy friend help me put it together and it took about an hour to get the whole thing together.
  • The games: the PC is, in my opinion, awesome primarily because of it's indie game support. With some more popular indie games, like Minecraft and Braid, to some of the more hidden games like Breath of Death VII, which is only a couple of bucks on Steam, you have a huge library of high-quality, cheap games to play. Speaking of Steam though, if you use the Steam client you will never buy a game for $60 again because you will be waiting for one of the ridiculous sales they have on Steam every couple of months. I purchased the whole Assassin's Creed series for $25 on Steam over the summer! You can get almost any game on Steam for under $30 at some point or another.
  • The freedom: unlike consoles, the limit to what you can do on your PC is unlimited! From simple things like changing your wallpaper to more advanced customization tools like Desktop Architect and Object Dock, you can do pretty much anything you want on your PC. Your PC is yourself on a digital frontier for you to explore the endless possibilities on your awesome rig. Also, how easy is it to get on GiantBomb from your PS3 or Xbox 360? Oh wait thats right there isn't even a browser on the 360 and for good reason because the PS3's browser is a piece of crap! Isn't it nice to be able to run your own music and play your games and run your own downloads without Microsoft or Sony telling you that you can only run one of them at a time, with a few minor exceptions.

Thanks for reading and as always, PC gaming FTW!!

All you really had to do was say:

The price (games and hardware both LAST and cost far less)

The quality

The freedom

Anyways, the first comment I read was about how people on this site wont say stupid crap and the next was that "it was nice to see this". Seriously folks, if you are on a website like GB.com to get your pc news you are just not a pc gamer. There isn't rules on this, there isn't some unwritten guide, there is nothing wrong with being a pc gamer on giantbomb, but the community just isn't behind the idea and majority of people on here hardly have any experience with PC. Even Geoff had his rig built for him and brad only plays starcraft. Dave and vinny hell yes, but in all honsesty they dont make enough content to justify posting this here. Go over and post a vid on youtube and spam it everywhere or something, but posting this here means only other pc people see it because there is no cross contamination of console/pc it seems.

anyways: http://www.ingamechat.net (best podcast for pc/console/anything)

also, serious sam 3!

but for most of you, you will look at this and say something like "What an idiot Sony/Xbox is way better!!!!!!!!!!" and for those people I am sorry because you are missing out on the longest lasting gaming platform that has been around generation after generation and can play games faster and sexier than any current-gen console ever will be able to. PC gaming FTW!!

No one on this website will come here and say this.

Maybe 8 months ago.

It is AMAZING to me that this guy things games based to run on an xbox 360 don't support a 360 pad. You need something called a driver, genius. Hell, so many games have abxy as the main buttons when they come from the shit60 it's rediculous. Fallout anyone!

You need something called "actual experience". in Bioshock2 they deliberatly ripped out the gamepad support that was present in Bioshock1 in the name of "better mouse support" (which however sucked as well). In Assassins Creed 2 its just a plain old bug that they never bothered to fix, it works perfectly fine with the wired one, just not the wireless one (unless you plug in a secondary wired gamepad, yeah, weird bug).  And there are plenty more games where they didn't bother to include gamepad support, such as Mass Effect.

Also try to properly quote, it's hard to guess what you are referring to.

Now that I finally have a laptop that can run a fair share of games I think I might be straying away from consoles. I have all of the current gen consoles, I highly doubt I'll by the next gen. I'm tired of having to pay $60 for live annually, having stacks of discs gets annoying, and they take up to much space on my shelf. I'm thinking about building a nice gaming rig when I have some extra cash and selling them all. That way I'd be able to play my games at home on my desktop and I'll have them on my laptop when I travel.

Once one generation of consoles has been properly emulated there will be another -- perhaps even two -- with countless new exclusives. Besides, if you have no objection to waiting years upon years for the ability to play console exclusives that are already out, chances are you didn't really care about them in the first place, and in that case a console would be a complete waste of your space even if it never got emulated.

Emulators are great in certain situations (e.g. if you for some reason ignored an old game when it was released and only just now took an interest in it, or if an old console of yours has broken), but they are no argument against consoles if the games one most wishes to play are current-generation exclusives.

@Icemael:You said 'never' and I pointed out that wasn't true. The rest is a matter of personal taste and choice.

That you immediately associate emulation with piracy says more about you than it does emulation.

Pretending emulation and piracy aren't related, doesn't make their heavy relation go away. How many people do you know that rip their ROMs themselves? Probably not very many.

I'll admit I'm confused as to how you would play Uncharted on the PC through means other than stealing.

I don't know much about emulation.

I can quote, It's called not doing it because stupidity doesn't deserve repetition.

I played AC1 and 2 with a wireless 360 pad. Hmmmmmmm I wonder how... THATS RIGHT! I TYPED WORDS INTO GOOGLE AND FOUND OUT WHY!!! YOU REPLEACE A CONFIG FILE AND IT WORKS OR YOU INSTALL THE FRIGGIN DRIVER!

In other words: You installed a homebrew workaround for a bug that the developers never bothered to fix. So much for the whole plug&play, works out of the box thing.  Just as I said.

Is it so hard to realize that all this crap you do to get things to work on PC is *exactly* the reason why there are a lot of people that prefer consoles?

No I did not install a homebrew work around. I put a control configuration file from my AC1 game into AC2. As far as that is concerned, FINE it isn't something in the box. But as I said, a google search and 5 seconds later, everything works. Is it that hard for you to realize that things can be simple and fixing something isn't always as difficult as editing some crazy config file and going 5 deep into the game install.

AND DONT EVER SAY consoles are better because they are simple and just work. Tell me there isn't some dude pushing the living room table out of the way in order to play motion crap, someone going to play a game and having a dead controller, a save corrupt error, someone trying to navigate the xbox menu and being COMPLETELY lost at it, someone calling microsoft or sony and complainging that their console has some flashing red lights and it isn't their fault, someone complaining that their $65 dollar purchase didn't come with the special key that it was supposed to, someone complaining on a forum that the dont have cross game chat, somsone whining that they have to pay for online, someone replying to the last guy that it is better that way because things just work, someone complaining that the wireless isn't working, that their router needs ports opened but they have no idea what that is, someone complaining about how the picture on his friends game is better because the shadows are darker, someone telling you how to set the HDMI correctly and a 6000 page thread about how it isn't better that way, someone telling your that you suck because your tv isn't calibrated, another news story about how the console of your choice doesn't have enough memory for their game and that the disk is going to be one 50000000000000000 floppy discs, someone yelling that they started a game and have to update it, someone starting a game and it not working because "it was just released and there is a day 1 patch", someone yelling about how the dlc should have been on the disc, someone yelling on a forum about how the console is better because it just works, etc.

Well guess what, if you can't copy/paste a file or google something once in a while, THEN JUST PLAY YOUR STUPID GAME ON YOU HAPPY BOX MACHINE.

@kingzetta: I feel as though console gamers do the same thing, however. They justify their console gaming through excuses of money, time, or whatever else it may be. Really, no one is right in this argument. It is more that everyone that argues about dumb shit like this is completely wrong.

Typical PC gamer that doesn't see a problem even when they bite him in the ass.  BTW. Does rumble work? Was that fix available on launchday?

I am not saying they are better in general, because that would be a stupid overgeneralize. I am saying they are *EASIER* and for people who don't like to copy config files around and waste their time twiddling with stuff that also makes them better.

Hardware defects can happen everywhere, get it replaced and be good. The fun with consoles is that you at least can tell when its a hardware defect, on PC it's rather tricky to find out of a random freeze was a game bug, a broken Windows install, an overheating GPU or some driver incompatibility.
Well guess what, if you can't copy/paste a file or google something once in a while, THEN JUST PLAY YOUR STUPID GAME ON YOU HAPPY BOX MACHINE.

The facts on the whole matter are rather clear:

  • PC games are almost always $10 or $20 cheaper, Steam Sales are also cheaper then anything on consoles
  • a three year old PC with a $100 graphic card upgrade can compete with or outperform a console graphically
  • a console cost $300, a new entry level gaming PC is more in the $600 range
  • consoles are easier to use and require almost no maintenance
  • consoles are dedicated gaming devices, PC are not, with all the pros and cons that that implies (having a real web browser is great, having background virus scanner cause game stuttering, not no much)
  • XboxLive cost around $50 a year, PC Internet and PSN don't
  • there are platform exclusives for all of them, but most mainstream  games these days are are multiplatform
So pick your poison. The problem with these arguments is that people tend to pick one advantage that their device have to justify the superiority of their platform, while ignoring all the disadvantages it brings.

@Grumbel: I remember Gary Whitta saying on the Tested Podcast sometime ago, about his tenure at PC Gamer. He and his boss would get in arguments because Gary just wanted to play games, while his boss was somewhat of a PC elitist. I think we should all try to become more like Gary in this regard, because it doesn't really matter how we play games, just that we play them.

We should also become more like Gary Whitta because that dude is baller as shit.

300$ for a PC? Then you'd just be playing everything on lower settings than the consoles are. And at 640x800. It's still very very cost prohibitive. I payed 1500$ for a PC 4 months ago and it's chugging on the BF3 beta.

I respect your opinion tremendously. I was a dedicated PC gamer. I also work on PC's 24/7, so the idea of playing a game on one started getting bleh to me. Mine is nothing but media storage and some minor gaming these day's. With the execption of the sims and a few other games my wife and I plan on making a serious of video's out of. I sadly do not PC game anymore

Dude, all you needed to say was "mouse and keyboard".
