Best Games of the Late 1980's

The late 80's took the formulas established earlier in the decade and refined them, taking full advantage of the power and popularity of Nintendo.

List items

  • When I am on my death bed, this game is going to be one of the games I'll want to see and, if possible, play. It is absolute perfection. Graphics, music, gameplay, the new abilities, the world map - everything is great.

  • The puzzles and platforming were much better in the second Mega Man. The graphics improved too and were less jittery. The music was a masterclass and I could listen to covers of the soundtrack all day.

  • Super C just felt so good to control. While it was pretty damn hard (except for the last boss), it was fun and an excellent addition to the series.

  • The JRPG grindfest continues but at least a better class system, better graphics and neat additions like a day/night cycle provided hints that a breakthrough might come soon.

  • The opening level, the subway car, the moment in the wrestling ring, the bayfront level - all had a sense of place and made the city feel real. A real absurd city - but still - graffiti and stray dogs were environmental additions that didn't do anything other than add to the atmosphere, a feature that most developers had not yet prioritized.

  • Sure, the story was overly melodramatic and convoluted, but those cut scenes looked good. The stupid birds, though! If you've played Ninja Gaiden, you know what I'm talking about. Also, having to jump to another platform instead of just pulling myself up on those ledges was frustrating. The game was a good romp but too difficult to be higher up this list.
