GOTY 2012

Game of the Year 2012 -- Favorite games I've played that released in (or around) 2012.

Update: Ok, this is a rather short list of games played/completed in this current year--and I thought I was more productive. Due to the brevity of this list I will forego the creation of a 2012's 2010 GOTY or 2012's 2011 GOTY lists. Listening to the GOTY podcasts now, and that will likely drive my 2013 playlist to prioritize what I missed in 2012.

List items

  • OK, so this will probably be my 2012's 2011 GOTY. And keeping it here in this list for now (Nov 15 2011 release). The mission structure was really excellent, even if the DLC ended up being less fun.

  • Interesting campaign, fantastical and a bit silly, but still a lot of fun, with good voice acting. Combat and upgrades were excellent, and I want more of this.

  • Picked this up just after release, and can't stop playing. The global event competitions really hit the right chord with me, although with Class 3 airports I have just begun to compete under the #GIANTBOMB Flight Crew, and that's fun as well. Usually using Flight Crew of #NORDH4MMER. Optimizing flow of passengers and cargo is very satisfying.

  • Totally engrossing campaign. Some of the dice rolls on hits to my key characters reminded me of MechCommander, when a sniper attack or very heavy damage seemed to come out of nowhere. Made me play more methodically, and it felt like that was the intent of the game. Took a sharp turn negatively for me though in the final act, with the heavy reliance on the psych-powered units (I developed three of them). The final level was an order of magnitude more difficult, and required multiple restarts--left me not wanting any DLC, and will go down as my favorite game that I traded in the quickest. I would really like a full-on sequel to this though.

  • Combat, weapons, and enemies are improved from Halo 3, but the storyline lost me in the first act. The prologue eluded to some interesting questions and inner conflicts, but really fell flat. Played on harder difficulty as usual, and it seemed a lot more fair than 3.

  • Ambitious campaign, but ultimately much less impactful than ME2. Getting the allegiance of worlds and factions ended up much less satisfying than the personal investment from 2. This game ended up feeling like a lot of nostalgia (hey, remember when we went through that thing in 1 or 2? yeah, that was pretty crazy...).

  • Interesting campaign, as Jeff said like a Japanese soap opera, even though I can't say I've ever seen one.

  • Big, expansive world, but I ended up not caring so much to finish the campaign(Nov 11 2011 release date). Mostly enjoyed the snow, in an ambient manner.

  • Played on a harder difficulty level, and that led to many frustrating moments, but I felt like I would miss out if I had lowered it. Some really good moments, but ended up just glad to finish it.

  • Found out I didn't really want more of Trials in the end.
