2018 Games

Thanks to @abczyx, I've started my own annual list of games here!

List items

  • [Switch] One of the best party games I've ever played. One of three video games my wife will play with me, too. Huge bonus points there. I love how actual communication with people next to you is effectively a mechanic of the game. I can't imagine doing as well at this game staying silent.

  • [GBA] I replaced the battery in my GBA SP this year, and I restarted this bad boy. Love this game to death!

  • [PC] Started. Need to continue and finish!

  • [PC] Blizzard's only game that's got its hooks in me still. My multiplayer go-to!

  • [PC] Short, but surprisingly good online multiplayer BS game

  • [PC] First entrance to the series. Started, but put down in favor of other games. I'll be back for you, MonHun!

  • [PC] A friend encouraged me to go for this one on a good sale. I am not a military shooter guy, generally speaking, but this one is... better than many! Honestly I'm just too bad to really get into it. And the combinations of characters, teams, equipment is so daunting. But I'll probably keep playing a session here and there.

  • [PC] I wanted this game to be more fun than it was. The art and music are right up my alley, and the single player is pretty fun with neat scenarios. But, after a number of repeated "cheap" losses on a single mission, I got fed up with the single player content. Stack that alongside a dying community around the game from day one, and I just couldn't play much longer. I really wanted it to be more, but I fear it just got swept under the rug by many soon after release.

  • [PC] Loved FTL with all my heart when it came out, and now we have a proper followup from Subset. This game rules, met all of my expectations and more, and is even more challenging than FTL in many ways, but as they've mentioned on the GOTY discussions, it most always feels *fair*. Sunk a good few dozen hours in so far, and I'll definitely revisit it from time to time.

  • [PC] Art = good. Gameplay/loop = satisfying. All-in-all a super fun game I'll keep coming back to.

  • [PC] So addicting, and filled my Hearthstone-shaped hole in my heart that had me considering going back to that money sink. Glad to have found this game.

However, if the art doesn't get a significant upgrade before 1.0, I'll be shocked. I love *playing* the game, but *looking* at it is another story.

  • [PC] Just started this one (October 2018) but DANG it's good. Huge fan of Giant Bomb's videos around this game, but I've really started to appreciate them even more now having finally played the game. Sean Bean promo for Hitman 2 got me to finally play this masterpiece.

  • [Switch] Wrapped up the main game + DLC this year, despite starting this immediately when I got my Switch at the end of 2017. Magical experience through and through.

  • [Switch] Super punishing, super fun game. The art and music are essential to the experience, giving this game its *styyyle*. The walking segments between fights are terribly boring, though.

  • [Switch] Best game on my Switch aside from Breath of the Wild. Captivated me from moment one, and kept me going more than any Metroidvania game has. It's my first one of the genre I've ever completed, actually!

  • [Switch] It's so obviously inspired by Subset Games' FTL in terms of progression, and has a beautiful art style. The amount of depth that it achieves despite being unable to micro individual units is impressive.

  • [Switch] What an absolutely delightful game. I really dug it. *pauses for applause*

As Brad S. said on a Bombcast sometime in 2017, the progression in this game is wholly satisfying. I enjoyed hunting for gems, killing baddies, and buying upgrades for my various tools. All of the weapons/tools you get throughout come together nicely in the later stages of the game, ending in a symphony of mechanics that's just *fun*.

The story was really fun for a while, with the climax of the story legitimately stressing me out (in a good way). However, I feel like it really petered out at the end with a few narrative shortcuts taken and it just left me wanting something more. Like I said, the mechanics are where this game really shines, and they kill it in that department. The music and art style are also way up my alley, which is really important for me in most games!

  • [Switch] What an absolutely monstrous game. I cannot believe how "ultimate" it really feels for a Smash Bros game. Always considered Smash to be a staple game in my life - something of an institution - and this one's no different. Had 15 people at my place swapping out and playing on launch day, and it was magical.

The online tho? Get it together, Nintendo. With so much *right* about this game, the online is just so backwards and bad. I had high hopes for the Battle Arena system, and it works mostly as advertised, but the fact that only 1 person per system can join a room leaves even this mode lacking.

Most of my time spent in Smash will definitely be offline unless some major changes are made. Good news is everything offline is great! Especially love the unique Classic Mode experiences for each character and World of Light is so charming and lovingly made.

  • [PC] Loving this so far - still excited to see what becomes of it in the future.

  • [PC] What an EXPERIENCE. I'm still working on 100%, as I will eek as much content as possible from this game. So happy to have finally played it. ?

  • [Switch] Holy crap this game rips. Got it to have some fun at a friend's place while visiting and it delivers all the first game had and more. Love the new weapons and styyyle of the game, which is something like gross-out Nickelodeon meets Playstation 1 graphics with thumpin' beats in the background.

*Edit - played this game with Dad over the holidays and we had so much fun. Probably the quickest he's liked a game I introduced him to ever? Still love this game.

  • [PC - Early Access] It's such a treat to be playing another Supergiant game so soon. They're back at it again with the best art and music in games (in my opinion), and they made a roguelike! I honestly would play their games only as a vehicle to experience the expert artistry and writing, but SG always makes a really fun, unique game with each title as well.

Hades is proving to be compelling so far, and with regular updates to come in 2019, I only see this game getting better and better.

  • [Android] Short, but incredibly worth the small price of admission, Florence is one of those games that I can *see* being on other platforms, but fits best on a mobile device. Something about the context of the story mixed with using a phone to play it, which is an increasingly intimate platform (what with social media and all the ways it connects you to loved ones). The innovative use of quick puzzles as a vessel for storytelling was also striking and beautiful. Did I also mention the art style just nails it? Cause it does.

    In summary: just play this.
