Top 5.5 games of 2018

I almost did a top 10, but I wanted to focus on the games that really stood out most among the 23 games I played this year. So here they are!

List items

  • [Switch] What an absolutely monstrous game. I cannot believe how "ultimate" it really feels for a Smash Bros game. I've always considered Smash to be a staple game in my life - something of an institution - and this one's no different. Had 15 people at my place swapping out and playing on launch day, and it was magical.

The online tho? Get it together, Nintendo. With so much *right* about this game, the online is just so backwards and bad. I had high hopes for the Battle Arena system, and it sorta works mostly as advertised, but the fact that only 1 person per system can join a room leaves even this mode lacking. And of course it's got netcode issues, leading to tons of lag.

Most of my time spent in Smash will definitely be offline collecting spirits and music and fighting my friends unless some major changes are made. Good news is everything offline is great! I especially love the unique Classic Mode experiences for each character and World of Light is so charming and lovingly made.

  • [Switch] Best game on my Switch aside from Breath of the Wild and now Smash. Hollow Knight captivated me from moment one, and kept me going more than any Metroidvania game has with it's unique music and atmosphere propelling me along. It's actually my first real step into the genre since it's the first I've ever completed.

Hollow Knight encouraged me to maybe take a second look at Metroidvanias I would normally have passed over before. I still don't think it's my favorite genre, but Hollow Knight itself really sticks out as one of my favorite games ever.

  • [PC] I loved FTL with all my heart when it came out, and now we have a proper followup title from Subset. This game rules, met all of my expectations and more, and is even more challenging than FTL in many ways. But, as Giant Bomb have mentioned on their GOTY discussions, it most always feels *fair* which serves as an encouragement to get back in there and try again when your mech units fall to their Vek foes.

I've sunk a good few dozen hours in so far, and I'll definitely revisit this game for years to come.

  • [PC] *duck emoji*

  • [Switch] Holy crap this game rips. Got it to have some fun at a friend's place while visiting and it delivers all the first game had and more. Love the new weapons and styyyle of the game, which is something like gross-out Nickelodeon meets Playstation 1 graphics with thumpin' beats in the background.

Played this game with Dad over the holidays and we had so much fun. Probably the quickest he's liked a game I introduced him to ever?

  • [PC - Early Access] It's such a treat to be playing another Supergiant game so soon. They're back at it again with the best art and music in games (in my opinion), and they made a roguelike! I honestly would play their games only as a vehicle to experience the expert artistry and writing, but SG always makes a really fun, unique game with each title as well.

Hades is proving to be compelling so far, and with regular updates to come in 2019, I only see this game getting better and better.
