Patch Day Tuesday

Tuesday is patch day and the topic will be MMO's!

When it comes to MMO's you either completely ignore them, you play them, or you PLAY them.  The latter meaning you sunk in deep to the addiction.

In the past MMO's were about the world and what was the theme.  Game play was almost an after thought because it was basically the same for every game.
Now the choices  we have in selecting an MMO have evolved as much the games themselves.

First there was Role Play - Did you want to be a space smuggler with your own speeder bike or did you want to be a valiant warrior with a heart of gold.  What was the universe and lore you would be living in. Even today this is still the most important choice.
Quickly Class became important - Later we started to think less about our characters and their back story and we focused on what our class would be and what it was capable of doing in the game.  Then we could work in our fantasy's around that.
Now we have to consider Game Play Style - Now not only do we have those choices but we have to consider the game play style as a huge factor too.  Do I want a classic hotkey setup, or try an action bashed skilled button presser.  FPS or Third person perspective.  Voice dialog for immersion or classic text based quest.
$Price$ - Buy the game and subscribe to the community, or just dabble in it for free and maybe pay a little because I like the things they are doing.
Community -  Does this game have a community that interest you, does the community just gather on a small message board where you know everyone or is it massive with conventions that fill arena's and contain player created shows that fill our airwaves and networks.

I try to encourage people to try interesting MMO's, but MMO free trails and demos can be a catch 22. MMO's require a huge investment in money, time and community, so the demos often feel underwhelming and flat.  However without a free trial or demo, how can you tell if the game is worth the investment.

Long story short and the reason for my post is to ask.

What was your first MMO and why did you choose it?  What factors did you consider above all else, Price? Community? Role Play?

Mine firstie Star Wars Galaxies.  Creating my own Star Wars hero and living in that universe, it didn't take much convincing.  I didn't even care about how to play it and
man I was a noob. I knew nothing of servers, zones and factions, I spammed chat asking if anyone knew the guys I worked with that also played.  (Maybe I shouldn't admit that).  I'll leave my adventures in a Galaxy Far Far away for another Tuesday.

Looking forward to hearing your responses.  I'm curious if most people jumped in on WoW or just eventually gravitated there.

Hi, My name is Dave

Hey guys.
I have been listening to the Giant Bomb podcast for about a year now.  I just heard of the site/show in passing on another podcast (the Instance) and so I checked it out and have been hooked ever since.  I also heard this site highly recommended by Angry Joe.

I have to admit I have only perved this site for the amazing quick look videos. I tend to get my game reviews from IGN and meta-critic.  Now I have replaced those sites with giant bomb and I hope to explore the community even more.

I have never been a blogger but the tools provided here are actually motivating me.  I will lay down some categories and try to pop in a couple of times a week with my submissions. I hope you follow my ramblings so that I am able to follow yours.

Once again, my name is Dave. My gamer tag is usually Vitalogy 11 and I look forward to a bombastic future.  (uck, why would I type that?)
