 1st Draft:

Inspired by the GTA3 theme music.

Feedback would be great.

I'm going to put all my time into finishing the Mirrors Edge Trailer I mentioned in my last blog. Hopefully it will be up by the end of the month.

Sounds good, man! :D

Feedback:

The drums don't fit in. Perhaps they just need a bit of mixing love, but it might be worth your time to try some other drums out and see if there's a better option. They're simply very busy and ill-defined.

The high pitched cymbal-y thing. Using it more sparingly would make it a more interesting sound, it's kinda all over the track and it gets repetitive.

There are a lot of sounds occupying the same frequency space and it's making it all a bit mushy / washed-out. Attack your sounds with some EQ and try to pull out their best qualities and make space for them in the mix. For example; anything that isn't the bassline or kick doesn't need low-end sub-120hz bass in it. EQ it out as it's just taking up the space of your bass and making the song muddy.

Brighten up your pads a little bit to make them airy. If you EQ way up towards the top end of the spectrum you add air to the sound.

I'm not noticing much in the way of panning. Everything seems centered or has a stereo effect applied. Pan stuff a bit. Like, put the sax on the right and the strings on the left. To keep it balanced, if you move something 25% or 50% to the left, do the same with a similar sound to the right.

The liquid-y pad you have in there with the chorus all over it, turn it down.

Add oneshots sparingly. I like to call them highlight sounds. Cymbals, sweeps, vocal snippets, etc. A well-timed sweep and then cymbal on a downbeat like the one at 1:36 can be way awesome sounding.

That's enough for now, I guess, haha. *rambles forever* :3

@Hamst3r:
Cool

  • I wrote that drum line myself and got a bit carried away lol. Do you think I should use a different drum patch or just rewrite the line so it isn't so busy.
  • Cymbol thing yeh ok will change that maybe save it for later in the track.
  • Should I just change the EQ on the main mixing desk or do I need to have separate EQs for each instrument.
  • FX Pads sounding airy would definately be better. Again can I change it on the mixing desk or do I need to go search around inside the different effects which are attached to the instrument.
  • Yeah I didn't know how to balance pan. Thanks for the tip.
  • K will find the chorus and turn it down
  • Do I need to add more of a build up at 1.36 do you think, should it pan across etc?

Ramble as much as you like I will still be listening :)

Whooooooooa - lightning round!

Different drum patch.

Separate EQs for each sound.

Modify the instruments effect directly.

Build-ups are awesome, but you don't *need* one there. Dropping out some of the audio then putting a sweep and a crash could be plenty.
