I don't think I've ever seen anyone liken DotA to Sylvester Stallone.

Adding to what GaspoweR said, a few of the hosts are friends of Patrick, Brad, Jeff from the old days of games journalism. It also adds a wider Japanese perspective to the site.

@uberleeto: The presence of the 8-4 Play podcast on www.giantbomb.com is a vestige of Patrick Klepek's affiliation with the site. I think his connection is to Mark MacDonald, a.k.a. "Game Jesus." Probably something to do with the message board, or IRC that Brad knew young Patrick from. I also seem to remember there being talk of a, "Giant Bomb Podcast Network," or, "Whiskey Media Podcast Network," when 8-4 Play began being hosted on www.giantbomb.com.

There's a little backstory for you, I hope you listen to the podcast, it's a lot of fun and they talk about stuff that you would almost never hear on the bombcast or beastcast.

@pixelsoldier: I don't think there was ever a talk of a podcast network outside of the GB podcasts. 8-4 always seemed like a one-time thing.

@amyggen: @pixelsoldier: @gaspower: @uberleeto: There's an insane video game website family tree story here, so sit back and relax.

So, Fame Douglas Ziff Davis used to publish a video game magazine, Electronic Gaming Monthly. John Ricciardi and Mark Macdonald were both editors there. At some point, Ziff Davis wanted a video game website, so they bought Gamespot (anyone from the early days of Gamespot maybe remembers ZDNet Gamespot). Familiar names such as Jeff, Greg and Ryan. At some point Cnet bought what was then known as ZDNet, including Gamespot.

Afterwards, Ziff Davis wanted an online "supplement" of EGM, so they started 1UP. And that's where Patrick comes in the picture.

Its usually a lot of fun and you will hear a completely different take on news altogether especially the bombcast impressions of TGS vs the 8-4 guys WOW! it was like two different events happened. Everyone should give it a listen.

It's like 10 straight minutes of Mark talking like a crazy person, and I say this as someone who likes Destiny just fine.

Royalties. You know why we buy games? Because they're good. Because they'll last us a long time. Because we want to see where the story goes.

We don't buy games because they have one of the 40 SAG voice-actors that the game and anime-dubbing industry ever uses. Everybody involved in the creation of a game should get a bonus, if advertising and PR is found to have been helpful, they should get a piece of that cake also. 10 million sales should not only reward the suits at the publisher.

Additional point - If SAG want voice-actor get royalty bonuses, so should the people directing them in the studio. So should the studio personnel, the audio engineers, the writers/translators. Without those people the voice-actors would sound like complete shit (like they did in the first English Tales of Xilia trailer on a technical level.)

(I bought a game for the sake of the voice actors once in my life, Chaos Wars. Will do it again if we get an FF12 HD remaster.)

@somejerk: Also pay every programmer, artist, designer, producer, etc. that made that game playable and an enjoyable experience that the voice actor could thrive in. Residuals are an all or nothing thing.

---

There are hundreds of non-SAG voice actors trying to get every part. Its a highly competitive market, and if these people stop working, we might just find some new talent. The only people that will suffer will be companies trying to develop sequels that require a returning voice actor.

Thinking about it, AAA studios love sequels. They make sequels to everything that sells even remotely well. And that pretty much always requires a returning voice actor. Sounds like a good time to negotiate a cut that takes into the account for previous games success, no? Do programmers, artists, etc. get that option? They sure don't.

Edit: If this means that I can hear a voice actor other than Troy Baker or Nolan North then LET THE STRIKE BEGIN.

SAG actors get royalties because they are SAG. That's what they're a guild for, to make sure they get paid for their performance.

It isn't about good sales, it's straight up the performance talent gets a cheque every time their performance is "sold" because that's the rights they have as SAG members and this is the same in every other performance industry with unions and guilds.

This is how it works in the music and film and any other industry that involves recording a performance and it's extremely important to their revenue. My cousin has been in a few adverts and gets paid royalties every time they're on tv. It's been going on as long as actors associations/guilds/unions have existed and isn't some sort of "vedjo james problem".

Hey fellas I enjoy listening to the podcast and its cool to see whats hot in Japan. Its been a while since I lived there. I find it quite interesting to hear the different POV of the different groups under the GB site (yes I am aware you are not a part of GB) and each podcast has an interesting outlook to some of the larger topics.

That being said I sort of felt that the discussion regarding voice actors in game was looks through a very narrow lens lacking a realistic insight. Granted, that you guys don't know much about the details but I have to say one side seemed more illogical in their perspective than the other. In this case I side with *Al Pacino as he seemed to atleast touch upon the messy side of the issue.

To me, it seems if the VA wins the vote, the guy who loves voice acting is bound to feel the effects more. All of this comes down to how and who the publisher/developer leaves to pay the bill. My crude logic dictates that it will be the consumers as the cost hiring voice actors will go up significantly per head the gaming companies will have to increase their sales quota to meet that profit margin and in the end we will be host ot even more DLCs with much less content.

OR games will move away from voice acting altogether. Only the ones that have a huge budget will afford to have their charms while rest of the game goes back to the era of silent texts as mid to low tier gaming companies will simply not be enough to fit a VA in their project while maintaining an affordable price for their humble games. I love plots and I love my voiced contents in games like TLOU but when push comes to shove I would rather read silent texts in a game than rather pay out extra cash to get DLCs in to have a title feel complete.

* See The Devils Advocate.

@redking56: Yes but are VA really the talent in video games? I don't recall COD became the must play game of all time Simply because Spacey's likeness was in the story? I agree there needs to be a change but I don't think VAs would be the main tip of spear to focus on but we also have to wonder who will actually have to pay for all these costs? Cetainly not the publishers unless they can turn a profit...

These podcasts keep breaking for me. It seems whenever I un-pause them, they start to play for a second then just stop and I have to refresh the page and find my spot again.
