You'll occasionally hear some stupid electronic buzzing in this, but it's short and not terribly frequent. You can thank my dad for putting his phone next to my recorder as his stupid eBay selling alerts went off.

Man, this got heated in a way where if it were my family, I would've seriously thought about whether I should post all of it or not.

I tend to agree with Dan on the Springsteen tickets. Regardless of whether the wife has a greater appreciation for the entire catalogue of Springsteen or not, when you're married there's an expectation that anytime you're buying concert tickets you should ask your spouse if they want to go, and you only get off scot free if they make it very clear they have no interest at all in going to the concert.

Is there a decent podcast app that will pull these premium podcasts? I often switch back and forth between listening off my phone and off my work PC, so something that "remembers" where I left off would be great. I'd really prefer not to install iTunes on my work PC. I've been using Overcast, which is great for switching between devices, and has a cleaner more responsive UI, but I don't see a way to add stuff from these feed there.

Overcast should work with this URL (replace "username" and "password" with your username and password, obviously):

Man, Dan has matured a lot. It's really awesome hearing him catch himself on the judgmental stuff. That's a really admirable trait. I think a lot of people could be better about catching themselves with that sort of thing.

Also, Dan is pretty much 100% right on all of this stuff.

When you get a Ph.D, you can't waste it by doing nothing. You can't get a doctorate unless you've contributed to science (built on the knowledge base of whatever he was studying). You literally can't waste a Ph.D. Well that's all I had to say.

Keep entertaining me; you guys do an amazing job.

While i have a similar gutreaction as Paul does to phony's and people who like a thing because it's popular, i recognize that that's more my fault, and won't give people shit for that.

That said, it's very dicky to not take your wife to a concert because she's not big enough of a fan to appreciate it.

It's so bizarre that discussions like this make Dan Ryckert of all people come off as one of the most nuanced and complicated members of the team.

He's completely right.

That was extremely dicky to do to your wife.

Also, who cares? Being someone who cares about weather or not someone elses love of something is the right amount for you, just drives you mad, for no reason. They don't care, they never will.

I agree with Paul about the Springsteen concert. When you get the opportunity to go to something you are very excited for, and the other person is not on the same level of excitement it can bring down the experience. It's really a compromise situation. Do I compromise my enjoyment of this activity for the other person to get enjoyment of going with me? With casual interests I have no problem letting somebody go with me, but if it's something very important, I don't want someone going who will bring the experience down.

Honestly, I've been following Dan since he was hired at GI and I think he's cool and all, but it really isn't fair of him to be this mean to his dad just for not liking wrestling and wanting to be alone most of his life. Like, as long as no one's getting hurt, there's nothing wrong with just not liking something that doesn't contribute much to society. I think making stupid voices and trying to piss someone off who wants above all else to be left alone is much more of a "dick move" than just try to spend some time away from a spouse at a Springsteen concert. For as knowledgeable as Dan is about games, Paul's "quick looks" and criticisms of media and stuff have been just as insightful and well thought out as Dan's if not more so in some cases, so I really don't think it's very nice or fair to act like he's some totally disconnected fossil when he at least gets why games have some degree of value to society (wrestling maybe less so). Of course, I don't mean to prejudge Dan's family for him or anything, but those were my thoughts listening to this.

If Pamela Anderson was super into Chinese checkers and you liked Pam Anderson but you did not like Chinese checkers you would play with her occasionally because it would be somewhat more enjoyable because she's super into it and you're doing something with someone you really like, but if you ever broke up, for a while, everytime you heard of Chinese checkers, it would remind you of her, and you may never play it again.

If Dan did his social experiment to break up with his girlfriend, she would probably never watch wrestling again. I agree with Paul on that one.

What is the big deal about the Springsteen thing? If she wan't really into it and he was a huge fan, and he had the opportunity to invite another huge fan friend of his... then what's the issue? Couples don't have to do everything together, they can have their own interests and spend time with other people right? Surely it's a win / win situation no? She wouldn't mind too much because she wasn't anywhere near as into Springsteen as him, and he gets to share the experience with someone who's equally enthusiastic...

The thing is Paul went alone rather than taking her with him. He didn't have a huge fan friend.

The people saying Paul is right are just objectively wrong. There's a world of difference between bringing someone that is a casual fan and can really enjoy a Springsteen concert (what his wife was, from the sounds of it) and how that can actually enhance an experience, versus bringing someone that hates something and will just shit all over it and ruin an experience (bringing Paul Ryckert to a wrestling event, for example). You do not have to "perform the proper obeisances" before you're allowed to go to a concert. The whole prove you're a true believer thing is real dumb in general.

To play Devil's Advocate for your dad about the Springstein stuff, my first concert was when I was 28 (yeah I don't know why it took so long). I was super psyched to go to this concert. My fiance at the time was happy to go but didn't really like the band nor was she a person who got excited about anything. Her presence greatly soured the experience although the concert was fantastic. I'm not saying your dad wasn't dickish, but I understand why he made the decision he did. Sometimes the presence of people going to things you are into can hinder the experience rather than make it better.
