Albummer! 23: Shaquille O'Neal's "Shaq Diesel"

This week on Albummer! we listen to the surprisingly palatable first rap album by basketball icon and fossil fuel appreciator, Shaquille O'Neal. This episode is brought to you by the 47 products Shaq is currently the spokesperson for.

The crew behind Two Minutes to Late Night are here to re-review some of the most critically reviled albums out there!

I ain't even gonna listen, I just came here to say y'all in for a treat.

That first album is far more enjoyable than it should be.

Of course the lyricist and lead singer of "Billy Ass and the Ass Boys" has opinions about the Green M&M's curves.

I remember this album being...not GOOD exactly, but not the calamity you might expect.

Shaq was a terrible rapper when compared to his contemporaries, but the album had good production (Erick Sermon of EPMD, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of Tribe Called Quest) and guest spots from people who probably wanted to work with an NBA All Star. While Shaq wasn't going to decimate anyone in a freestyle battle, his enthusiasm was the final component to get the album to gold at the time, I'm impressed it eventually made it to Platinum

This episode got extremely off-topic in the best way. Really interesting discussion about the evolution of millennial music.

I didn't watch this episode yet, I will for sure, but! One question : is there any intention to have Jeff Gerstmann on for at least one episode? The ones with Jess and with Jeff B were great, but I really wanna see Gerstmann talking shit with the Albummer crew, it seems like it would be such a good fit!

Could always use more Zelig references. There was lot of Radio Days in this conversation.

My dad had gotten this CD in a record of the month club and never touched it. Over 10 years later I found it and took it out of its plastic and listened for 30 seconds and was disappointed that it wasn't terrible I guess. Also enjoyed the generational music gap talk, was curious what you guys thought of that festival, it just makes me feel old as does the mountain goats tiktok thing jeremy mentioned

I don't have a lot of personal effects in my office. No pictures pictures of loved ones, etc. What I do have pinned up at my desk is a newspaper cutout of when Shaq put his mansion up for sale.

When I'm having a rough day, that picture of a semi truck with an aquarium inside and the Superman logo on the grill busting through a living room wall just gets me through it, you know?

@evergladeking: I saw a list of artists who had never gone platinum, and there are some stone cold classics in there (the Ramones, Misfits, and Slayer classic period all come to mind) and yet SHAQ went platinum. Kudos to the PR team who pushed that one across the line.

The first 15 mins of them chatting and joking was hilarious. I always look forward to every episode because of group chemistry like this.

I don't know I how I hadn't heard of that When We Were Young festival.

As a kid heavy into that scene in middle and high school, that lineup looks freaking awesome. I can't afford to go, but I hope that works out for everyone.

Every time Emily mentions 'Jamie' I just think, "oh yeah, thats right". Still a weird 'degrees of separation' thing there that takes me back for a second. Would love a guest appearance sometime, although the show stands on its own and you guys are great!

I havent finished the ep yet but i remember liking this album and being really surprised at Shaq's ability. But of course, the most memorable Shaq rapping moment was him dissing Kobe after the 2008 finals in a freestyle.
