The space documentary Ren & Stimpy. I love this show.

And it was made in six days. I'm dying.

This was a fun episode and the conversation was much more focused this time around. It was smart to feature shorter videos. Also, the cutaways to flat Dan (tm) are priceless. Bakalar did a great job of explaining these ideas.

I wish the Fermi paradox had been outlined a bit better. They kept starting and stopping the video and so some of the finer concepts got buried, especially the idea that if advanced life naturally occurs throughout the universe, a percentage of civilizations would have been around long enough (long before us) to either (1) send out signals that we could (and would) have received by now, or (2) present visual evidence of being an advanced spacefaring civilization, e.g. visual evidence of star harvesters, artificial signals from galactic networks. (Evidence of aliens is not just about spacecrafts coming to Earth, which as the video pointed out, is pretty unlikely anyway in the absence of FTL since the universe is expanding and may never stop expanding).

The idea that advanced civilizations always die out before reaching a phase where these signals and cues would be observable? They can't be hand-waved away. Unless EVERY advanced civlization always evolves to a point where they learn how to be truly invisible to other life forms, it's a true paradox. My lame theory is that life fundamentally devours the life-giving forces of the planets on which they evolve. And then, inevitably, every civilization creates its own alien version of Twitter and accelerates the process of extinction.

Oh and everyone who hasn't yet should go out and read The Three-Body Problem. I think Dan might even enjoy that one.

I think my favorite tidbit was Dan asking what all this spinning accomplishes because it's a good question. Orbits are the balance between objects pulling in toward each other and an object having an initial linear momentum. The latter bit is especially important because it then makes us ask what cause that linear moment in the first place, which is an ongoing project to figure out at bigger and bigger scales.

In the end, it accomplishes a great deal because it's what keeps atoms intact and celestial objects from all collapsing together. Of course orbits aren't perfect so these collisions are happening constantly anyway.

This was super fun! Dan is making some good inferences based on his own existing knowledge, which for my experience is better than him screaming "I DON'T KNOW WHAT BUTTER IS" into the void and hoping other people pick up the slack.

Minor sidenote, it is always somewhat amusing to me when people see or hear of coincidences and decide that they are too coincidental to be a true coincidence and that there must be a reason. The reason they are coincidences is that they are simply a set of facts which are interestingly intertwined, and there are a hundred billion other related facts which do not intersect interestingly. The whole thing with coincidences is that they're amusing or interesting because of their innocuousness. it's like finding two broken pieces of chip from two different bags that fit together or something. it's just neat.

Never thought I'd see GB doing a "React!" video but you know what, I love it. You've found the best way to do this.

Loving this first season, hope you keep it going!

The sun is hot! The sun is so hot that everything on it is a gas, iron, copper, aluminum, and many others!

The sun is large! The sun is so large that if it were hollow, a million earths could fit inside... and yet... it is only a middle sized star.

The sun is far away! About 93 million miles away, and that's why it looks so small!

I would have loved if they would have talked more about "The Dark Forest Theory". Hearing Dan get freaked out by the idea of possible reapers would have been fun.

Jeff you uncaring fool. It was like every time Dan started expressing how our absolute insignificance gave him comfort- as it does me and several others that have posted here- Jeff tried slapping that down and trying to suggest that no, it should be terrifying.

It is terrifying. All of it. That's what makes it so comforting.

I completely disagree with the notion: "Who gives a fuck about us?" related to the size of space. We give a fuck about our problems, that's the only thing we have and the only thing that matters to us.

Also, I think they missed the point that the space is expanding outwards and away from us. Everything is getting further and further away the more we wait, that's why most things will be out of reach.

I don't know what the deal is, but the video streaming on this site has gotten noticably worse over the past few months. It's hard to complete a single video without having to reload or the site just straight up crashes. Odd.

Only Dan would ask questions about firing an Amiibo into Jupiter and whether sticking a shovel into Jupiter would create star goop.

Love this show!

An excellent second epsode.

The zooming out to show the scale of everything always blows my mind. I can watch those vidoes over and over again and I'll always marvel at it.

Dan came with a lot of good questions and theorised some legit possibilities that people had acually considered. Entertaining. Good times.

My only slight remark for this episode is I wish they'd given the Fermi Paradox more time. Jeff kept saying that it's a list of possible scenarios but didn't really go through many of them. The video didn't feel as focused on those variables as it was made out it would. I'm sure I've watched a Fermi video on that channel which really goes into each scenario of the paradox in much more detail. Maybe I'm misremembering. But it's just so interesting that I wanted Dan to really appreciate it because he kept mentioning some of the things and they never expanded on them.

Dan's take was unironically a good one. Being so hung up on "omg i mean nothing in this universe" is such a dumb, Gen-X nihilist mentality.

Play Space Engine, VR optionally, and go up to black holes and other shit. It's one of the scariest games I've ever played and instantly traveling to other galaxies really makes you feel tiny
