Something about DOOM makes the Southern mannerisms come out in Brad.

According to many speedrun videos, the key to surviving on Nightmare mode is to keep moving and never stop. You have to run and gun like crazy. Also, you can't depend on glory kills. Many speedrunners just wreck through as many enemies as they can with their guns. And the most important strat, they know where the enemies will spawn from.

As much as I can appreciate the designed details of this game, it is still simply so, so ugly to look at from a UI perspective that I just can't get behind it.

Gah I stupidly bought this game at retail and I really hate having the silly Bethesda launcher.

However it is on gamepass...hmm

Set it to nightmare

Turn off the UI

Keep the FOV at 90

Select VHS render mode in the menu

Increase the film grain to 100

Play with controller

I think Doom Eternal is fantastic. I really didn't understand the negativity towards it last year. Doom 2016 obviously had the surprise factor and the story was better, but I thought Doom Eternal was mostly an improvement.

@jrowley223: it's a hard and exhausting game for a lot of people. I very much enjoy it and would call DOOM Eternal my 2020 GOTY, but I understand it can be just that.

I absolutely love the game, it has one of the best flow states I have ever felt in a game. However it also suffers so badly when that flow state falters that its jarring and horrible. Is that a fault of the game or of the high-highs it reaches? I'm still not sure, doing more to assist this could break what is already there.

Its going to divide opinion because it forces you to play in a certain way, it is not a traditional FPS because you must respect its combat chess rules or you will fail. These rules are what creates the flow from enemy to enemy, the split-second decision making just to stay alive, but they are still massive constraints on how you play the game. You can't just run through entirely with a certain weapon you enjoy, each weapon is a counter to a specific enemy.

Learning these rules also makes the first few hours of the game hell (no pun intended)

Really interested to try the new crosshair out, there are so many things to juggle that an on screen prompt could really help me out

@luissrod: Haven't watched. Am I mistaken, I thought the team all played DOOM Eternal seeing as they all loved DOOM enough to put it on GOTY. Did they not get excited for a sequel to a GOTY candidate. Could have sworn all of them at least played to half the game. Did they all just collectively label it bad given all the backlash on it being too hard, or the sound designer, etc. Starting to feel the background of games is affecting my opinion on games, unfortunately, so I can see the reason, if they quit cause the stuff going on behind the scenes.

@topcyclist: They were mostly so-so about Eternal, especially compared to Doom 2016 where they all loved it. I think the loop with all the extra sub weapons and the story is what mostly threw them off of it, which I understand. There are so many things to keep track of during tense (and relatively long) fights and the story is some really dumb fun

@luissrod: Ah, I sorta get it. Thou their love for DOOM was always a mystery to me, like their love for PUBG that one year and their wave past better battlegrounds games like Apex or COD. I attribute it to me not growing up in the same era and having no nostalgia for DOOM. So much so, that one DOOM with lighting that everyone hates, looks...cool to me. IDK maybe ill try it on game pass. Anyway, I played DOOM 2016 and kinda wanted more of a story even if it was considered generic, lore was important for me like Halo and how no one really knows what's going on in those games but still likes the story. The story helps push me, carrot and stick style. Their love for DOOM combat never hit me since I felt the beginning was slow and could never get to the point I liked it and quit. That said, I think what they all gushed over, was what you get by the midpoint or end. So color me surprised when I play DOOM eternal which is meh by the crew and It finally clicks for me. I'm guessing the first few levels of DOOM eternal, gameplay-wise is like the final levels of DOOM. I loved the fast pace and powers, and kept waiting for the "BAD" part everyone online said would come, so much so, that I got anxiety waiting for this game I was enjoying, to petter out, and kinda put it on the backburner. Weird, I know. Finding outside sources color games as much as them being good or bad. I even spoiled myself and watched the big twist, cause everyone online was adamant that the story was trash. Kinda still liked it. I don't know if I'm some weird anomaly. I'm guessing I dodged the long fights and stress of ammo gun changing by just lower difficulty if the choice was I stop playing or lower the difficulty so the ai isn't so spongy. I don't see it as that bad since you can hire it back up if it's too easy in a section. The ai being spongy is just adding the repetition of me dodging and hitting, not really challenging my ability just my monotony. Eh, who knows. I notice the crew rarely enjoys sequels as much, Shadows of war, GTA 4 vs 5, Mario maker, Hitman 2 vs 3, origins vs oddessy, etc. Could be the spark is gone after the first.

That stage at the start shows everything wrong in gaming today, and some things wrong with this game.

They really went too far with the "EVERY ENEMY IS A HEALTHPACK/AMMO PACK" and they ruined everything that made Doom 2016 excellent with overreliance on that gimmick.

It also commits the cardinal sin of bad jumping puzzles in a FPS game.

Also all the stupid cooldowns were a bit much.

Weak points are "optional" but if you don't hit them on enemies you're going to be wasting too much ammo which for some stupid reason in this game is limited... wtf, but that's to keep you popping these stupid "AMMO PACK" baddies with the other awful gimmicks like flame thrower or whichever does that, all these meters constantly dinging is really stupid too.

I LOVED Doom 2016, I can barely bring myself to play Doom Eternal even though I pre-ordered it.

If they make a new Doom in this series I hope they take all the trash out of it and go back to the spirit of Doom 2016.

@demigodraven: probably the best weapon in all of gaming, then they put a grappling hook on it and it sets the enemy on fire! Bliss.

@oueddy: didn't love the game but I did love that weapon with the flaming hook especially with the slow-down rune it was always this slow motion "fuuuuuccckkkk yoooouuuu" as you zipped right into a demons face
