I would have never finished Dark Souls if it wasn't for Vinny, Patrick and Brad. Thanks-you for the motivation.

2)Brad's crippling sparkly lizard addiction is hilarious

It really isn't. I am partially deaf and I have to use volume normalisation filters in my video player to be able to hear what they are saying, when he goes after lizards he shreaks and growls really loud hurting my ears.

So I can either not listen to what they are saying, or hurting my ears every time he shouts. Great choice...

also does anyone have an isolated, high quality sample of the crystal lizard sound? I'd love to have it for a textone or something.

I find it a little funny how Brad went from parrying a bunch of stuff like a boss in the first episode, to never parrying and sometimes not even remembering to block in the later episodes.

(I don't generally parry much either since I don't like the risk, but just keep your finger holding the L1 button unless you need to regain some stamina, man!)

@roy42: This is the best post ever. Well written, comprehensive and spot on!

I have been thinking exactly this for a long time now.

Its been prevalent in QL's but nowhere has it been more evident than these videos.

You Sir, have been able to sum up my precise thoughts which I have considered posting but cant be bothered to.

Each video is more frustrating to watch because of his crippling self doubt and lack of knowledge, which pops up every 5 minutes in the form of "oh wait, didnt I just..?" "hmmm I dunno", "But I always thought...", "so it turns out...." "yeh but I really wanna..." and "wait, oh I see. No, no, I just didnt want to...."

Its maddening.

And the thing is, I like Brad. I really do. The things that he knows a lot about, he speaks with authority about them. He often makes great arguments and knows when a game sucks. I just wish there were times when I didnt have to witness the process of him acquiring that all that knowledge.

For one thing, I didn't say he's frustrating to watch because he's not an expert. With all respect to him, Brad is the very last person I would ask for expertise on just about any game. Maybe Starcraft 2.

For another, I don't actually know why this series exists. I mean this particular Breaking Brad. The series was originally Brad bashing his face against a brick wall of a difficult achievement until either the game or he caves. Typically it would be him, because, as I mentioned, his style of play almost never evolves. Then he played Doom 2, and while it still seemed quite hard, the fact that he could save at any time also seemed to take the same level of challenge away from the video, as well as the fact that it was being done in multiple sessions. The segments of the BLLSL were a return to what the series started out as, and then Spelunky and Volgarr were just about him beating the game, the latter being done across multiple sessions and with per-level saving again.

These Demon's Souls videos, though, just feel like him playing a game. A game that punishes you for your mistakes in a fairly severe manner, but nothing specifically excruciatingly hard. Maybe it's the slower pace of the game in general, but really: am I the only person who thinks this is more like Bradley May Cry than it is Breaking Brad?

Brad is adorable when he sees a lizard.

edit: I haven't finished yet so maybe this was covered, but would the thief ring he got help with sneaking up on them?

Yes, it would. Never leave home without your Thief Ring when you go lizard hunting. Also, I found that bow is a lot more reliable than Soul Ray for hitting lizards.

Best Part - Brad's irrational obsession with the lizards.

Worst Part - Brad's reckless fighting style on the second toughest boss in the game. And, still beating him with relative ease.

Of course, I wasn't level 40 and didn't have any magic. But, the Flamelurker was a royal PIA when I fought him.

Okay, after watching all of these Demon's Souls videos so far, as well as having watched a lot of videos on the site over the years, here are my observations about Brad.

1) He has a tendency to get fixated on a certain method of doing things. Once he's learned something by somebody telling him, or he's figured something out on his own (or, to be more specific, once he thinks he's learned something), he will make that all he tries to do, no matter what. It happened in the Lantern Run videos the guys did; he was adamant that the buzzsaw and shield are the best weapons and that lightning is utterly useless, he convinced everybody else of this, and so they had a significantly harder time of things because they were trying a strategy that was doomed to fail. When he originally attempted the Mile High Club, he had a set path that he would try that wasted almost all of his time moving through the bottom floor slowly, but it was what he had deemed the right thing to do in his head, so he simply tried to do exactly the same thing, only faster. In Demon's Souls, when he first(?) became human, he was insistent about keeping the ring on that would reduce the rate of invasions, yet also insisted that he couldn't just kill himself, because being human meant that he wouldn't have to waste a ring slot on the Cling Ring, and never addressed the obvious flaw in logic (thankfully he seems to have just gotten over being invaded and actually makes use of the second ring slot now). In the previous video, in 5-1, he would always switch to the Soul Ray to try and pull the troll from across that one bridge. He'd have to manually aim it, lose most of his MP doing so, have not enough to kill it, then nearly (or completely) die to it, rather than try anything else that would have been safer and more effective. In this video, you can now see the full extent of this, where the idea has been seeded in his mind that it's an immutable fact that crystal lizards are always the most important thing, that if you see one, you need to drop everything and go for it, that if you kill one and get its stuff, it's the greatest thing ever, and that if it gets away it's worth rage-quitting over.

2) Despite the first observation, Brad is also unsure of himself. At all times. He forgets things constantly, he's never ready to commit to anything, he always needs to ask for confirmation from other people on everything, even when he's supposedly the person with the most knowledge about the game. He will almost always immediately defer to somebody else's suggestions and go back on things, even when he's gotten fixated on something. You can see this in every Demon's Souls video so far, where he is constantly fighting with himself to either use magic or hack and slash his foes. I was genuinely surprised that he killed the Patches guy in 4-2 without any prompting from anybody else; it's the most autonomy he has shown, and probably ever will show, in this whole series. Other examples of these two conflicting attitudes of his are when he got very intently focused on acquiring the Adjudicator's shield, then ignored it because it didn't have 100% damage reduction (to be fair, though, I'd have rejected it as my main shield for the same reason), immediately buying the Warding spell and then focusing on upgrading INT so he could equip it and Soul Ray, then almost never using it and actually getting screwed over by it almost every time he'd use it, having to be reminded that the Soul Ray pierces foes, or that the fireball spell could be used continuously, and, one of the biggest ones, constantly going back and forth between fretting that what he's doing in the game is wasting time and not very entertaining to watch, then saying "fuck it, everyone should have been expecting this".

These two facts about Brad's play style in just about any game are, I think, why he is one of, if not the most frustrating person on the site to watch play games. Not because he's necessarily bad at them, but because he is bafflingly inconsistent.

Yep, this all checks out. Warding pretty clearly says it only reduces physical damage, then he tries to use it take magic shots from the Reaper. Brilliant.

To be fair, there are sometimes gaps of like a week or more between play sessions so he forgets things, but his playstyle is fundamentally weird.

The lizards are admittedly bullshit game design and the worst way to put scarcity in a game, but his unbridled rage at losing some of them seems pretty silly when he basically isn't using anything but Darkmoonstone. Brad's lootlust is kind of terrible. It's really bad when you watch him play terrible games that happen to be loot-based, because he'll be pretty positive about the game despite it being a poor game. I get Vinny's collection habits when it's in service of like, "finding everything in the game", but Brad's addiction to getting useless crafting materials that will never help him is just baffling.

Also, LOL at anyone who tries to out-DPS a boss in Demon's/Dark Souls unless they're wearing the heaviest armour in the game. That first death to Flamelurker when Brad still had a million grasses was completely retarded.

everything that people find frustrating to watch in this series i find hilarious. there are other games that i cant stand to watch him play, but since i haven't played these games maybe thats why i find it so funny.

still a good feature imho, and everyone psychoanalyzing him isn't going to prove anything, the videos are still entertaining to watch.

How long will it take Brad to complete this? Is it a big game?

I started watching this, Brad took too long and I switched to Jeff Greens Dark Souls stream, I've watched like 80 hours of that and at the pace Brad is releasing Demons souls streams...... well? Should I stop - is it not going to be completed?

As someone who played a pure archer on his first run through this, watching him kill arguably the most important vendor in the game was hard.

EDIT: Good news, Brad! You CAN buy Stones of Ephemeral Eyes from Patches. He should be in the Nex--OH WAIT.

I don't remember or care to check which video it is, but since this notification reminded me of this, I might as well also mention here that the Storm Ruler (you know, big sword you use to rend the skies in 4-3) that Brad neglected to use when trying to kill the lizards in 4-3, then stubbornly defended his not using of it by saying that he had it confirmed that it wouldn't work against anything other than the Storm Demon, actually would have worked. Anywhere in the open area of 4-3, the Storm Ruler will send out the shockwave; even against the lizards, though it does such piddly damage that it takes four hits to kill them.
