Playdate: Dead Space (05/27/2020)

So... I guess I made an impression during this session. For those wondering what happened when Abby and company say "I'm sorry but one of the mods is telling a story more disturbing than this game" that was me. I chimed in during the talk about Middle School to share some "stories." The story that grossed out people the most was the following (and I will be putting this behind a spoiler in case people do not want to read this):

One time while I was teaching sixth grade, one of my students sneezed so hard their head hit their desk. After they recovered, they came up to my and raised their bloody hand which had three baby teeth and asked to use the restroom. They were fine, but there was a blood splotch on their desk.

Starting playing this again on PC, and holy smokes it looks great at 4K60. Still a stunner.

For all the jokes they made about them hammering in "go for the limbs," Abby didn't take it to heart at all.

Finally watched the Sudoku video they keep referring to and it was an absolutely sublime viewing experience.

One of my favorite parts of the game was seeing the suit evolve and get more armored up. Such a unique design with the ribs instead of classic armor plating. I know it was based largely on a diving suit but I dunno what the ribs are supposed to be, apart from being pretty damn cool.

I had to check out of this series but I hope they're enjoying it at least.

all the shitty comments on the last video about 'abby not playing right' really put a bad taste in my mouth.

from a gamedev perspective, you can't expect everyone to play your game exactly one 'perfect' way. and if your game doesn't hold up to different styles of play, maybe examine why its not working for some people. Also, DS is extremely action oriented and i always felt that the tension of the game sort of dies once you've seen the main enemy a couple times. So i agree with her not finding it that scary.

i think a lot of people have very fond memories of this game for a variety of reasons. EA killing the franchise and the studio, nostalgia, the lack of AAA horror games in general for example. And thats driving a lot of the defensiveness in the comments. (not to mention the "girl isn't doing game right" sexism)

I say all this as someone who absolutely fucking loves this game, despite its issues. The art holds up amazingly well, the sound design is excellent, and environments are immersive as all get out.

in short, lay off yall.

@ten10140: @a_green_olive: Just remember, Abby is playing in small chunks, week to week, on stream and trying to stay entertaining and contribute to conversation. The dismemberment schtick is pretty unique to this game, it’s not instinctive, and the game hasn’t reiterated it since her first play session.

I played the game back at launch after the marketing had drilled into my head that that’s how you’re supposed to play, so I did. I imagine without that context it could easily slip your mind.

You can and should buy ammo. Save ammo and aim smart. Telekinesis everything. Hack limbs off like the developers wanted.

I hope by the end of the game the inventory is literally full of ripper blades and nothing else.

I love this game and this series. Good stuff breh.
