I'm fairly confident this was a semi-scripted demo.  Check from 3:27, where he raises his hand to select an info point on the dash.  The cursor moves up from the bottom of the screen while his hand is still by his side.  He then 'reacts' to the cursor appearing and quickly moves his hand to the right place.  It's quite clear that he is pretending.

No doubt they'll be able to make all this work, but I don't think it's ready yet.

Yup, also noticed that. That was the part that convinced me it was scripted.

I started to get excited when I saw head tracking, and then realized what utter nonsense the rest of the demo was.

Wow, way to dumb down Forza. That mode and those 'innovative' controls look like garbage. What is the point of playing a racing simulator if your not even going to operate the accelerator/brake pedals?

I thought moving your head around to control the camera was awesome until I remembered that the TV will remain static. Stupid.

"Thanks to the magic of kinect and x box 360"
Doesn't he mean thanks to 5yr old technology that was finally made viable by the wii.

Give me a controller and the ability to head track. That is what we want. We don't wanna stand up.

That's immediately what I think when I hear about head-tracking. Try to turn your head all the way to one direction and continue to look at the screen....

..... it don't work like that, son! The only way to fix that would be to intensify the tracking to allow smaller head movements, but then the screen would just shake constantly because your body is rarely completely static. I don't see this working.

I dont know, may get tiresome to have no "feedback" on your movements. Pressing down an imaginary gas-pedal could tire you out.

Pun intended.

Sorry.

Well today's your lucky day! Acceleration is completely automatic, as is braking. You dont need to press down on any pedals.

With regards to driving games, i'd actually prefer to hold a wheel i'm my hand, getting used to just clenching fists at 10 to 2 will just be bizarre...

I will admit that the looking around the car stuff looked more natural with Kinect. However, the interactions weren't anything that couldn't be done with a normal controller. I wonder how much that would differ from examining a car in Forza 3, for example. Meaningful additions, like changing the way you apply decals to get more natural orientation controls, would be an improvement. This seems like unnecessary window dressing.

@zeemod155:
Been saying that for ages too. Very few people have room for this thing. Most people have furniture in their livingrooms. I would love for this tech to be useful and stuff, but it seems this will be microsofts version of the Eyetoy. Launch with a few wii-sports-like games and then dissapear into obscurity.
Hope sony's wand thingies are better. Dont think they require a big open space to be used.

And also, the moving your head around while the TV remains static part. It seems silly, but once you've started using it (I've had a Track IR that i've used in racing sims and flight sims on the pc for years) You'll never go back to playing without it. Don't look at it as "looking around". It's more along the lines of just being able to control the view with your head. Traditionally you'd have to do that with a Hat switch on your thumb (for flight simes) or not at all in racing sims. Either that or just a left and right button that snaps your view to the side. Very unnatural and disturbing.

sry but this is not at all what Forza is about, waving your arms to stear the car? Yeah...super realistic, come on turn 10, focus on the important stuff! Like amazing graphics, great controll ( using a stearing wheel or a NORMAL controller ) because this is NOTHING a hardcore Forza player is going to enjoy, the only thing missing is the function to paint your car with your hands...

So, I'm not sure Kinect is the future of racing, but they did just show how it will be the future of selling cars without going to the dealer (i.e., virtual car show). Neat, but scary marketing potential.
