E3: The Conference Room Experience

Does anyone have an extra hype meter? Mine broke during Just Cause 3.

I feel like there was East and West, but they didn't so much meet together as more sort of stood side by side in the same room.

Maybe we should play the game before we assume it will handle its themes as poorly as the internet thinks it will.

Please make video games grow up and use more thought provoking concepts, but never mention any historical event as a reference point ever. Humans never do that.

I don't think anyone is offended by "Mechanical Apartheid", it's just that it's such a dumb thing to say. I'm sure Deus Ex will be good.

@amyggen: I promise you there are very much real people actually offended/upset by the use of the term. It's not difficult to guess where it's coming from, either.

The silliest thing about "mechanical apartheid" is they actually filed a trademark for the term.

I wonder if they were thinking, "Man, we really struck gold with this cyber racism thing."

I'm a bit puzzled by the island in Just Cause. Seems the ispiration is coastal Italy/italian islands, but in the midst of italian words and names they throw in a couple of spanish words (ie: policia)

Can't wait to play the game tho! The second Jeff turned to Vinny, excited as i haven't seen him in a long time, my hype spiked to the roof

There's probably a person out there offended about anything you can think of. It's a big world, and a big internet. My point is that most of the reaction I've seen here and elsewhere to that term is more about how fucking stupid it sounds.

Not sure Austin is winning me over. I don't dislike him, but after these press conferences he just got kinda annoying to me. It just feels like to me he went out of his way to say SOMETHING every single moment, instead of waiting till he had something good [or funny] to contribute like most of the other guys. Like he couldn't resist saying something for every single sentence everyone would say.

I figure it probably has to do with him being a new hire and wanting to prove he contributes, but it went a bit far [this comes from someone who has a habit of talking too much in some similar situations].

Or maybe this has something to do with subconsciously he hasn't "paid his dues yet" as a giant bomb cast member but at some point seriously it felt like he wouldn't shut up >_> [with all due respect].

Oh well, he still has plenty of time to win my heart, he seems like a nice guy :) , but I just feel maybe only add something when he actually has something meaningful to contribute a bit more. I really felt like this became the Austin Walker comments on E3 conferences with a panel of guests from giant bomb series of videos. [I think he had some great things to contribute, just it became too much of him, same would happen if the other guys did this honestly I feel... well most]

Just trying to provide some constructive criticism! Don't have harsh feelings or anything. He still seems like a nice guy and will do well here. Just wish he would filter himself a bit more.

This also is coming from a guy who didn't like Drew when he started doing quick looks. Not didn't like as a person, just as him being in quick looks. I think looking back at his early ones I still stand by this as I felt he was just a lot more boring at first. However, it just seemed he was uncomfortable or something getting used to doing that sort of media. He found his voice and now he is one of my favorite quick lookers.

So they totally "Destiny-ed" Hitman? Small amounts of content put out semi-regularly? Sadly, I might really be into that.

Give him time. It sometimes takes a while to get fully assimilated into the Bomb crew.

His love for giant robots has already won me over though.

About the early part about the merger. I appologize about dumping this in, but the SE merger has became mythological despite the historical information to its contrary.

OK! Now that that's out of my system, now to the conference!

Vinny is in hog heaven about JC3, and his playing it will be GLORIOUS.

I'm really hoping Star Ocean 5 is better than the series has been lately; t-A has done some truly confusing mistakes with the franchise like reducing 2's great crafting and proffesion systems to middling levels and misuing Akira Yasuda's character design talent tells me they're still doing this. Oh well, the combat should be smoother than 4s, which was smoother than 3s, so I still nurse some hope.

Also, Austin: Your zingers are amazing. Some great snark. Keep it up!

I know, I'm just being an asshole.

But Apartheid has race connotations, so you can't add mechanical before it, it doesn't work. Mechanical Segregation of People of Race.

Although the word itself can be used this way, since it just means "being apart."

Eh, it's dumb.

@marokai: Jesus, do you always feel the need to defend major corporations from critics and jokes?

You wouldn't see a film director or novelist grinning and proudly announcing "HEY, SEGREGATION AND RACISM ARE HUGE FEATURES IN MY NEW PROJECT! Get Hyped!" Mechanical Aparthied is a dumbass phrase, made only dumber when integrated into a fucking commercial for an action game. It was just as silly as when Witcher 3 did "AND EVEN RACISM!" in a trailer, listing it off as a bulletpoint in a feature list.

Bad E3 press conferences are like used car dealership ads at 3:00am. "THIS SUMMER, YOU CAN PLAY AN INTENSE THRILLRIDE FEATURING FIRST PERSON DISMEMBERMENT, CO-OP MULTIPLAYER, GENOCIDE, AND EVEN CHILD MOLESTATION. REDEEMER OF DAWN COMING JULY 2016!"

@slang_n_bang: Of course it's dumb and on the nose, just like that indie thing from the EA presser when the Swedish dude openly spelled out "The red yarn represents love! It runs through peoples lives!" Trademarking a term is also a little ugh. I just don't have a problem with the use of the term in the story of the game, which a lot of people seem offended and upset by just by virtue of its existence. I tend to think by the old maxim that truth is stranger than fiction, and in some hypothetical cybernetic future, I could easily see that term being thrown around.

The way they presented a lot of these projects as just beginning makes it feel like they needed filler so they had a platform for them to launch their mobile games. It could just be that tangible stuff had already been released, but this whole thing felt a little flat.

Also, the mechanical apartheid illuminati.

Nier is seriously amazing. That's all.

Edit: Actually, no. I implore Vinny and possibly Austin (since he seems like more of a cerebral gamer (whatever that means)) to finish Nier so we have at least some people championing it at Giant Bomb. The story in that game is soo good.

So is Taro Yoko like Frank?

Also,

There is no problem with mechanical apartheid as a phrase. There are dumber things in games and their marketing.

People getting incensed are just looking for their cause du jour to get angry about. I think those people should take a chill pill.

@dr_mantas: Oh wow! That'd be awesome, didn't even think about that. It's definitely in a similar league to Deadly Premonition (great premise/story/characters/music, questionable gameplay, outdated graphics) so, YEAH!
