Endurance Run: Shenmue - Part 03

Man I was a complete sucker for those QTE cutscenes.

@dovah: It doesn't help they didn't use VGA, so the game looks oddly dark and blurry.

Damn it! Now I think I have to pull my Dreamcast out to play Shenmue again. Moreover, I have Shenmue 2 which I never finished on Xbox too. (Much of what I hoped was to be 'smoothed out/improved' in Shenmue 2 was made a bit worse in Shenmue 2, or that was my impression at the time. I found Shenmue 2 less charming from what little of it I played before moving onto another game.)

At least I now know why Ryo is looking for "some sailors".

Such a great marathon. I always felt curious about what the hell this game was all about. Since it was the previous marathon that showed me the joy of PERSONA, im looking forward to what this one will bring

Is this like the original Witcher 3? Just walk around and talk to people?

I don't get Dan's insistence on playing with the default settings.

First off, they don't, because they're using subtitles.

Second, there's a quick travel option in the game, it's not like they'd be using a cheat or exploit.

Third, if the reason they're using subtitles is "for the viewer's sake" than that same argument would easily apply to quick travel.

Wonder if they'll ever learn that you can move Ryo's head around to identify buildings, roads and various objects? Wonder if they'll ever explore Ryo's room and find all of the items scattered about like the letter from his father, cassette player, move scrolls, etc?

That was a scary ending... I don't think I can handle this kind of tension.

Some of you guys gotta chill. Vinny wondering around and making mistakes is exactly what makes this entertaining. Of course they're not going to know where everything is like those of you who played through this game multiple times.

If this weren't in the can already I'd offer to bring them my working VGA box.

@dray2k: All I could find for DC emulators was that NullDC is practically dead but there are off shoots of it that exist such as Reicast that very much continues but is for Android only and Demul. The one other one I found was Chankast but their own website hasn't been updated since 2005 so I won't bother with that. After posting that comment I sought to see how things were. Testing Shenmue with Demul, I get weird slow down despite having a beefy machine and the graphically quality is nowhere near on par with NullDC but NullDC seems to have some audio issues that I read are a common complaint (I'm sure there's a fix if I do a little more reading).

@mckinley: It's actually pointless posting any tips, this ER has already been completed.

@mrcraggle: Really, they've said they already recorded the whole thing? That's a huge shame as I was gonna ask them to please invest in a VGA box for the Dreamcast to get 480p and improve the picture quality on this. It's a super easy and not that expensive upgrade that will greatly increase the picture quality assuming they have capture gear that has VGA input. I'm a bit surprised they didn't do that, they must have researched how to get the best picture quality from a Dreamcast. As it is, it looks like they went with composite and the video is super dark and very blurry, making my enjoyment limited and likelyhood of sticking with watching this series almost zero. I can only take so much of really dark, grimy and blurry gray and brown environments.

Still, thanks for the entertaining videos guys. Please put some effort into getting the best possible picture quality next time, would be much appreciated.

the not knowing how or when to use the zoom button is making me want to rip my hair out, they're missing so much stuff!

We aren't setup to do VGA captures from here and 480p [EDTV] would cause its own problems. Pretty sure most of the folks I knew who had a Dreamcast used composite. At least here in the US. I guess you can consider this the reality and not the ideal. Either way, sorry you can't watch it.

Totally rasta and ghetto-street culture, but more like a curious standpoint if that makes sense.

You know, I love this feature and all but man I am surprised every day at how bad they are at retaining information. Like not even between recording. Like during it. Like five seconds after being told where to go.

I mean yeah I definitely have seen plenty of Hip-Hop influence there. Persona's music for example and there have been great Japanese Hip-Hop artists actually. But I mean... would you see a Rasta guy really putting on like that? I was under the impression weed was highly illegal there too so that it'd be hard to find or use, but that's just my small bit of knowledge on it.

@vinny: It's Dreamcast, I'm not losing sleep over it over here. Thanks for bringing the ER back.

I still have my copies of Shenmue 1 and 2 for the Dreamcast, this makes want to play through them for a 3rd time....arrghh..

Glitches are not unknown in Endurance Runs; I remember that progress they lost one episode of Persona 4.

Yes, but Shenmue has shorter loading times.

This game seems like the opposite of modern open-world design. Everything handcrafted and without procedural generation

Just want to say, thanks for this feature. It's made me want to hunt out a way of playing this game.

Just wish there was a nicer alternative than looking for old Dreamcasts on the internet ...
