Giant Bombcast 09-10-2013

Vinny returns from vacation with a secret. Brad ponders the fate of open-world video games. Drew crashes a Jetski. Jeff looks on, disapprovingly. Dota 2 gets caught up in a liquor store heist gone horribly wrong.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

The Xbox One will just be released in a handful of countries this year. People who don't live in the big countries like UK, Germany and France are boned. They might as well never bring it out here because I'm getting the PS4 that will be released here this year.

The funniest thing about it is that Poland apparently can make The Witcher 3 for the Xbox One but can't play The Witcher 3 on the Xbox One. Best part? CD Projekt apparently didn't know about that shit when they agreed to show that trailer during Microsoft's E3 conference.

GTA 4 is great. OK, you don't like it that much Brad. I loved it. Every minute.

I feel like there was a very poor defence of the game on this podcast. Though maybe the rest of them don't like it that much either.

It's a bit jarring to remember that Giant Bomb gave Grand Theft Auto IV their first Game of the Year award after hearing some of that talk. But given that the internet at large turned on that game a couple of years ago, I guess it makes sense that sentiment would finally make its way up to Game Journalists on their lofty perches.

Any game receiving that level of hyperbolic praise (single highest scoring game on Metacritic) probably deserves to be knocked down a peg or two but it's something I've noticed happening a lot recently, like with GOTY 2008 runner up Metal Gear Solid 4 being trashed on the bombcast fairly recently as well. Oh, don't worry, I'm sure the backlash against GTA V will happen much sooner once critics start giving it perfect scores and compare it to immaculate art, or something.

Why cant people just enjoy games and people who dont enjoy those games just shut their mouths? Nothing of substance can be gained from it... Jesus fucking christ

@arbitrarywater Agreed, I seem to remember Vinny praising GTA IV when it came out while He was still at Gamespot and praising it highly. And Jeff reviewing it VERY highly.
Plus, as to Metal Gear Solid 4 didn't Giant Bomb do a whole Spoilercast devoted to MGS4?
Confused by their contradictory comments on this.

Still a great one though!

@tormasturba: Games age, and they don't all age well. Upon release, it's easy to get caught up in the zeitgeist, and those games were revolutionary for their respective series.

Those games were almost never highly praised by this staff for how well they played, but rather that the game parts didn't ever get too much in the way of what was good about them (I'm pretty sure one of the arguments for MGS4 was "This is the best playing game in the series. Other games do what it does and do it better, but this is the best playing Metal Gear game").

With GTAIV, it was the brilliant characterizations and the tonal shift from San Andreas into a gritty, grounded game. With MGS4, it was the batshit insanity of everything that was happening, the goofy anime-esque storyline, and the resolution to stories dating back into the 90s.

And no matter what anyone says, I may have loved and still adore that game, but the time between starting the game and leaving that first house feels like such a fucking slog.

Same here. The Netherlands got boned aswell. Wich seems weird, since we were one of the few xbox heavy countries in Europe. But i switched to Sony about 3 years ago and it seems alot more people will do that this year.

I'm from the Netherlands too. Insanely disappointed by the news that I didn't get it on day one. I have both consoles pre-ordered, but I figured Xbox One would be my main platform as the 360 was. But I guess that's not even an option anymore, since I'll have to wait 3-6 months before I'll get mine. Weird strategy choice. Perhaps they figured people would buy an Xbox anyway over here? Similar as people in Japan would buy a PS4 anyway so they might as well release later?

No matter what they thought, I guess I have no choice but to go with PS4 as my main platform.

Europe is small enough for you to travel to another country and get an Xbox One right? I mean France is only like a 5 minute drive from the Netherlands, Germany like 15 min tops. Also isn't the Netherlands part of France?

I'm kidding ;p

I don't believe the reasons why Sony is releasing PS4 later in Japan is the same reason as MS waiting to release in the rest of Europe.

@mrpandaman: The problem is that Xbox One actually is pre-ordered out for day one elsewhere that's near me. Also, I contacted several online shops and they say they are not allowed to ship it to another country. Even Amazon straight up said: no, you cannot buy this from us. You must wait until it's officially released in your country.

I contacted Microsoft about this, but seeing as I'm just some random guy and not a news reporter or anything without proper channels, I don't get beyond customer support and all they can tell me is: 'I'll write a report about this and file it to the people that make these decisions'. When I ask to talk to someone who knows more, they simply say they can only pass on reports and not connect me to anyone else.

So... no. Not really an option.

@zevvion:

I was joking, it sucks not being able to get the Xbox One, but hey at least you'll have a little time to wait for the Xbox One to stabilize.

Wait... I thought all Euros spoke the same language... or at least inheritantly all understood each other :p Also why wouldn't you want German ads? You could ostensibly change the language of interface and the XB1 is no longer region-locked, right?

It's barely fair to call any open world game slow when you're fresh out of Saints Row 4.
